This Festschrift is published in honor of Kim Guldstrand Larsen, one of the earliest precursors of computer science in Denmark, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. During the last three decades, Kim Guldstrand Larsen has given major contributions across a remarkably wide range of topics, including real-time, concurrent, and probabilistic models of computation, logic in computer science, and model checking. Since 1995, he has been one of the prime movers behind the model checking tool for real-time systems UPPAAL, for which he was a co-recipient of the CAV Award in 2013. The Festschrift contains 32 papers that feature the broad range of Kim Guldstrand Larsen's research topics, such as formal languages and automata theory; logic; verification, model checking and testing; algorithmic game theory and mechanism design; semantics and reasoning; real-time and distributed systems; and modeling and simulation.

Model checking is a computer-assisted method for the analysis of dynamical systems that can be modeled by state-transition systems. Drawing from research traditions in mathematical logic, programming languages, hardware design, and theoretical computer science, model checking is now widely used for the verification of hardware and software in industry. The editors and authors of this handbook are among the world's leading researchers in this domain, and the 32 contributed chapters present a thorough view of the origin, theory, and application of model checking. In particular, the editors classify the advances in this domain and the chapters of the handbook in terms of two recurrent themes that have driven much of the research agenda: the algorithmic challenge, that is, designing model-checking algorithms that scale to real-life problems; and the modeling challenge, that is, extending the formalism beyond Kripke structures and temporal logic. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems, TACAS 2000, held as part of ETAPS 2000 in Berlin, Germany, in March/April 2000.
