Second edition of a book first published in 1986 by Angus & Robertson and reissued by Oxford University Press in 1993. The first volume in a trilogy on Australia's wartime relations with Great Britain, it discusses the behind-the-scenes struggle for power between the British and Australian Prime Ministers, Winston Churchill and Robert Menzies, particularly in 1941. The two leaders' conflicting demands centred around Menzies' attempt to protect the integrity of the Empire in its pre-1939 form and Churchill's policy of pursuing total victory, regardless of possible consequences to the Empire. This edition includes some minor changes and incorporates some additional material, mainly in the introduction. Includes photographs, chapter references, bibliography and index. The other titles in the trilogy are 'Reluctant Nation' and 'The Great Betrayal'. Author is an ARC Senior Research Fello at LaTrobe University. Other works include 'Claiming a Continent', winner of the 1998 South Australian Festival Award for Non-fiction, and a biography of John Curtin, winner of the 2000 Queensland Premier's Award for History.
