Excerpt from Clinical Diagnosis: A Handbook for Students and Practitioners of Medicine It is common to find that at the bedside of a patient the observer fails to apply the knowledge he actually possesses; it does not occur to him to follow up the inquiry by the necessary methods; although he may be perfectly familiar with them, he may not think of them at the time, or at least he may fail to recognize their importance for the case on hand. This Manual, however, does not aim at supplying an easy and certain method of making a diagnosis. It would be strange, indeed, if any book could teach a student to do that which the' most accomplished physician is often unable to complete to his own satisfaction. But one well-trained in clinical observation, if unable to make a diagnosis, can at least examine his patient thoroughly, and it is in this respect that he has an immense advantage: the case is thus put in a fair way for a diagnosis whenever this becomes possible. Excerpt from A Handbook of Medical Diagnosis for Students The ability to make an accurate and, at the same time, rapid diagnosis is, in a measure. A gin, but in much larger de gree the result of careful training and experience. Students are prone to look upon the diagnoses of their preceptors or clinical instructors as made by Intuition. But the accurate diagnosis is made as the result of observation and reasoning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Clinical Surgical Diagnosis for Students and Practitioners When Dieffenbach summarized his views on trephining, in his classical work, some sixty years ago, before the question was definitely settled, he wrote as follows: - "Up to quite recently it was the first urgent duty of the surgeon, immediately after the injury, to make a large crucial incision, and to search for fissures or fractures. Occasionally I found on my arrival that the hairy portion of the head had been ploughed up by incisions, backwards and forwards, crucial and transverse. This was considered to be indispensable in all head injuries. A surgeon who had omitted to make the crucial incision would have incurred the same responsibility as one who failed to open the window in endeavouring to rescue a victim of coal gas suffocation." At that time there was no "cerebral diagnosis"; but nevertheless the surgeon's need for a diagnosis had to find some expression. To leave an injury to Nature, without knowing whether or not a fissure was present, was considered to be an unworthy and culpable piece of surgical inactivity, because the real danger of a fractured skull had not yet been clearly ascertained. Philosophical speculation took the place of observation, and therefore surgery for a long time was guilty of one of its greatest sins, in breaking the law primum nil nocere. We smile at this kind of diagnosis; but posterity will look upon some of our exploratory procedures, involving flaps of half the skull, much in the same way as we regard those meaningless "crucial and transverse incisions." The maxim "nil nocere" must be observed, not only in treatment, but also in examination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manual of Differential Medical Diagnosis The author feels grateful to the medical profession and students in medicine for the favorable reception this little work has had at their hands. In less than two years this little book has reached its third edition, and al though not intended as a complete work on medical diagnosis, it has met the requirements of the student, by affording him an easy method of learning the most characteristic symptoms of diseases and their diagnosis, and the busy practitioner by furnishing him differential diagnosis tables of all diseases liable to be confounded one with another.
