She has been involved in MSP research and practice for over 20 years, and has participated in numerous national and transnational European MSP projects.

As the demand for space availability in marine environments increases due to the upward trend and intensity of human activities, Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) becomes the key response for accommodating sectoral policies in a way that is both compatible and ecosystem friendly. The book Marine Spatial Planning: Methodologies, Environmental Issues and Current Trends is addressed to people involved in coastal and marine spatial planning and management, such as administrators, planners, decision makers at different political levels, engineers, stakeholders as well as academic staff. It can also provide a sound background to post-graduate and PhD students working in relevant studies. The reader will be able to find information on the legal framework, the methods used so far, the ecosystem oriented approach and the current views as they have been implemented in some marine areas of the world. The book is organized into three sections: Section One focuses on the governance of the seas, international conventions and laws as well as the physical aspects of the marine environment. Section Two includes the most established methodologies in marine environmental quality assessment and planning; particular emphasis has been placed on integrated methodologies merging political, economic, environmental and societal information. Section Three is a selection of case studies that will familiarize the reader on current aspects and experiences gained from marine spatial studies procedures in different areas of the world.

Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is an integrated and comprehensive approach to ocean governance and is used to establish a rational use of marine space and reconcile conflicting interests of its users. MSP allows both a high level of environmental protection and a wide range of human activities and emphasizes coordinated networks of national, regional and global institutions. This book focuses on the framework of international law behind MSP and especially on the transboundary aspects of MSP. It first sets out a general framework for transboundary MSP and then moves on to compare and assess differences and similarities between different regions. Specific detailed case studies include the EU with the focus on the Baltic Sea and North Sea, the Bay of Bengal and Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The authors examine the national and regional significance of MSP from an integrated and sustainable ocean governance point of view. They also show how transboundary MSP can create opportunities and positive initiatives for cross-border cooperation and contribute to the effective protection of the regional marine environment.

The generation of offshore energy is a rapidly growing sector, competing for space in an already busy seascape. This book brings together the ecological, economic, and social implications of the spatial conflict this growth entails. Covering all energy-generation types (wind, wave, tidal, oil, and gas), it explores the direct and indirect impacts the growth of offshore energy generation has on both the marine environment and the existing uses of marine space. Spatial planning has a vital role to play in the move to a low carbon energy future and in adapting to climate change. To do this, spatial planning must develop and implement new approaches. This book informs environmental planning professionals, students and those interested in oceans and coasts from an environmental perspective about what is needed for planning and management of these unique environments. It is comprised of twelve chapters organized in three parts. Part I highlights the basics tenets of environmental planning for oceans and coasts including important concepts from the general field of planning and coastal and ocean management (e.g., hydrography, oceans policy and law, geomorphology). Environmental problems inherent within oceans and coasts (such as sea level rise, marine pollution, overdevelopment, etc.) are also addressed, especially those at the land–sea interface. Part II covers those methodological approaches regularly used by planners working to improve environmental quality and conditions of oceans and coasts among them: integrated planning and management, ecosystem services, pollution prevention, and marine spatial planning. Part III focuses specifically on state-of-the-art tools and technologies employed by planners for marine and coastal protection. These include systematic conservation planning for protected areas, decision support tools, coastal adaptation techniques and various types of communication, including visualization, narration and tools for stakeholder participation. The final chapter in the book reviews the most important concepts covered throughout book and emphasizes the important role that environmental planners have to play in the protection and well-being of oceans and coasts.
