This manual provides detailed information regarding Defense/Joint decorations and awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (DDSM), Defense Superior Service Medal (DSSM), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM), Joint Service Commendation Medal (JSCM), Joint Service Achievement Medal (JSAM), and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award (JMUA). It provides procedures for preparation and submittal of: recommendations for the Medal of Honor (MOH) and Defense/Joint Decorations and awards; out-of-service requests for awards; lost award recommendations; posthumous awards; award replacements; and reconsideration of award recommendations.

In accordance with the authority in DoD Directive (DoDD) 5124.02 and the guidance in DoD Instruction 1348.33, this Manual reissues DoD 1348.33-M to implement the DoD Military Award Program policies and procedures. This Volume: (1) Provides procedures and guidance regarding creation, activation, and award of DoD service awards - campaign, expeditionary, and service (CE&S) medals. (2) Provides the basis and eligibility requirements for award of DoD CE&S medals. (3) Incorporates and cancels References (d) through (y). This Volume applies to: a. OSD, the Military Departments, the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Joint Staff (JS), the Combatant Commands, the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Defense, the Defense Agencies, the DoD Field Activities, and all other organizational entities within the Department of Defense (hereafter referred to collectively as the "DoD Components"). b. The Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service under agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services.

This manual implements Air Force Policy Directive (AFPD) 36-28, Awards and Decorations Programs; and AFPD 36-31, Personal Affairs. This manual governs the Air Force special trophies, awards, decorations and memorialization programs. It applies to Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard personnel; and where specified applies to Air Force civilian employees paid through appropriated funds. In collaboration with the Chief of Air Force Reserve (AF/RE) and Director of the Air National Guard (NGB/CF), the Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel, and Services (AF/A1) develops personnel policy for the Air Force Awards and Memorialization Program. Ensure all records created as a result of processes prescribed in this publication are maintained in accordance with Air Force Manual (AFMAN) 33-363, Management of Records, and disposed of in accordance with the Air Force Records Disposition Schedule located in the Air Force Records Information Management System.

The first and only comprehensive examination of all decorations and medals that may be awarded to Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel for heroism, achievement and service. Features never-before-published historical information on the background and development of each medal, while also providing in-depth discussion of award criteria, design and recipients. Decorations examined include combat heroism awards such as the Navy Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, and Silver Star. Non-combat heroism awards such as the Navy-Marine Corps Medal and Coast Guard Medal are also discussed. Fifty full color photographs of sea service awards, many of which have never been published, provide context for this unique history. The authors, both of whom retired from the Armed Forces, are experts in the history of U.S. awards and decorations.

This is the first and only comprehensive history of all decorations and medals that may be awarded to men and women serving in the United States Army and Air Force. The background and design of each medal are examined, as well as award criteria governing each decoration. The book first looks at the Army and Air Force Medals of Honor before continuing with other awards, including the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Air Force Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. The histories of more common medals like the Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army and Air Force Commendation Medals and Army and Air Force Achievement Medals are also included. Photographs of each medal (obverse and reverse) accompany the text, along with selected photographs of recipients and the citations for their awards.
