Legal Education in Asia: From Imitation to Innovation is a curated collection of case studies that critically examine how conventional "transplanted" approaches to legal education are, or are on the cusp of being, redesigned across East Asia.

This book is a critique of the rapidly changing nature of legal education in major Asian jurisdictions as diverse as Afghanistan, Australia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam. It provides cross-country comparative material, including western legal education systems, and particularly detailed coverage of Japan.

This book describes the history, present status and possible future models of clinical legal education (CLE) in 12 Asian countries, with particular focus on the Asian character of CLE as it has evolved in different countries.

This book contains a scholarly analysis of the status of legal education in 14 Asian jurisdictions, namely Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. What these jurisdictions have in common is the increasing acceptance of the rule of law as the organizing principle of governance, along with pluralism as a fact of life. Law is an integrating element reflecting cultural pluralism amidst social and economic inequalities and political power struggles. Published in 1999, this volume contributes to the debate on convergence and differences in the role of law and legal institutions throughout the world. Globalization and technology may allow convergence of lawyers training, practices and values. However, local conditions may create resistances and barriers which must be acknowledged and studied. The book focuses on social values in legal education and practice in four regions: East Asia, South Asia, South-East Asia and Latin America.

Clinical legal education has revolutionized legal education, from its deepest origins in the nineteenth century to its now-global reach.

This work explores the tension in East Asia between the trend towards a convergence of legal practices in the direction of a universal model and a reassertion of local cultural practices. The trend towards convergence arises in part from 'globalisation', from 'rule of law programs' promulgated by institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank, and from widespread migration in the region, whilst the opposing trend arises in part from moves to resist such 'globalisation'. This book explores a wide range of issues related to this key problem, covering China in particular, where resolving differences in conceptions about the rule of law is a key issue as China begins to integrate itself into the World Trade Organisation regime.
