Forged in a London fire ritual in 1979 and reborn with their original line-up in 2008, Killing Joke have been creating uncompromising music for over 40 years. In addition to their incandescent self-titled debut in 1980, they have released essential albums in each of the past four decades: Night Time (1985), Pandemonium (1994), Killing Joke (2003) and Pylon (2015). But Killing Joke are more than a band; they are a primal force that exerts an intangible gravity on both its members and its fans. They have influenced countless groups across multiple genres – including Metallica, Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails – while their own style ranges across post-punk, dub, industrial, world music, electronica and alt-metal. Their equally eclectic lyrics traverse social alienation, dystopian futures, the folly of hubris, Cold War dread, paganism and the occult. Above all, their work embodies a process of self-discovery whose aim is nothing less than the revelation and integration of our darkest urges. Killing Joke On Track covers the fifteen studio albums and almost 200 songs of Killing Joke’s vocation to date, including obscure gems, live albums and compilations. It’s a celebration of a band who are often challenging, always provocative, but ultimately life-affirming. Nic Ransome spent most of the past 20 years as a screenwriter and is currently researching toward a PhD. Straight out of school in the mid-1980s, he self-published a rock fanzine then played bass in a short-lived space-punk band, before dabbling in theatre. He spent the next ten years doing a series of bullshit jobs to earn a living before rekindling a teenage obsession with movies, which eventually led to a seven-year stint at legendary British film company Hammer. This book is Nic turning full circle back to his first love as an adult: writing about music, specifically a band of which he’s been a fan going on 42 years. He lives in Suffolk, UK.

From humble beginnings, as they emerged pimple-popped and sweaty out of a global New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene infiltrating California in the early 80s, through to almost complete world domination, sell-out tours and Billboard chart success, Metallica’s story is like few others. With an insatiable hunger and hell-for-leather attitude, they helped to forge a new direction for metal music across the world, combining progressive anger with, at times, sweeping ballads. In the space of just a few albums, they went from thrashing wannabes (Kill ‘Em All) to real heavy rock contenders (...And Justice for All), before unleashing a new blend of chart-topping heavy metal on the masses (Black Album). Through a succinct and detailed song-by-song analysis, this book charts every twist and turn, heartbreak and line-up change peppered throughout their more than 40-year career. As well as studio albums, an all-encompassing round-up of live, cover, collaboration and compilation albums solidifies this comprehensive study. If they aren’t on the road, it seems they’re in the recording studio, with an incessant hunt for the next loudest, ground-breaking sound spurring them on. They rode a wave, then started a tsunami, so prepare to be blown away. Metallica give you ‘heavy baby!’. Barry Wood, born in Ely, Cambridgeshire in 1977, grew up in Lincolnshire, studied drums at music college and graduated with a degree in Journalism from the University of Lincoln in 2005. Cutting his teeth as a news reporter at a local daily paper for a few years, he then moved into communications for the NHS. A lover of all things musical, he’s drummed in various bands (covers and original) since school and completed an MA in Creative Writing while writing his first novel. A dad of four living in Lincolnshire, Metallica has always been a passion.

When Guy Fletcher protests at a feeble joke he overhears in his grotty local pub, he finds himself headbutted and struck by an idea in quick succession. Is it possible to trace a joke all the way back to its original source? Guy's meandering trail leads him to a humourless Hungarian dentist, a hyperactive troupe of Boy Scouts, a group of giggling gravediggers and half a dozen undercover detectives. And there are some pretty odd things happening along the way. Guy is sure he's being followed by a sinister Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman. He has an unfortunate accident on a banana skin. And there's a fly in his soup. Guy is on the verge of discovering something very unpleasant. Making jokes is no laughing matter...
