Originally published in Tokyo in 1939, these advertising designs and motifs exemplify a commercial impulse to marry a distinctly Japanese esthetic with the Western Art Deco style popular at the time. People, landscapes, animals, flowers, and food are rendered in full color in a variety of techniques, including lithography and machine-printed woodcut.
