Ageing, Gender and Sexuality focuses on the experiences of older lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) individuals, in order to analyse how ageing, gender and sexuality intersect to produce particular inequalities relating to resources, recognition and representation in later life. The book adopts a feminist socio-legal perspective to propose that these inequalities are informed by and play out in relation to temporal, spatial and regulatory contexts. Discussing topics such as ageing sexual subjectivities, ageing kinship formations, classed trajectories and anticipated care futures, this book provides a new perspective on older individuals in same-sex relationships, including those who choose not to label their sexualities. Drawing upon recent empirical data, the book offers new theoretical approaches for understanding the intersectionality of ageing, gender and sexuality, as well as analysing the social policy implications of these findings. Gender and sexuality are recognised as key factors in determining a person's experience of later life but little research has been done into how age, gender and sexualities work together and with other divisions, including ethnicity and class, to form a range of inequalities and opportunities for people as they age. The collection brings together an international group of researchers and writers from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Israel, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK, and the USA, who argue for multiple, complex contextualised and spatialized approaches to understanding intersections of ageing, gender and sexualities and uneven outcomes in later life. There is growing evidence that the sexual rights of older people are not being met. One reason connects with the way that older people are viewed. In many cultures, older age is associated with decline, frailty, and disease and this construction of the older person positions them as dependent, powerless, and vulnerable.
