Economic growth and socio-economic development are particuliarly important for developing countries, and the construction industry plays a central role in driving both of these. Traditionally the issues faced have been assumed to be merely offshoots of those encountered in industrialised nations and are usually discussed only in this context. In addition, research in construction management and economics has generally failed to take proper account of the unique or highly emphasised characteristics of the industries in developing countries, or their economic and social environment. This volume challenges underlying assumptions and focuses on the distinct characteristics of construction in developing countries. In so doing it considers the issues from the perspective of the developing countries themselves to present a strong contemporary picture for researchers. This study looks at how the construction industry of developing countries can be improved, with special attention to the role and importance of a central agency in administering the industry's continuous development.The book first reviews the nature and problems facing the construction industry in developing countries and the recommendations commonly made, which in turn show the need for action of a different nature. Part 2 then focuses on the Singapore experience over a 25-year period as it attempted to develop its industry without a central agency for construction development, later set up as the CIBD of Singapore, while Part 3 considers the circumstances behind the Board's formation and assesses its work. Lessons from Singapore's experience especially relating to the setting up and work of a central agency, and factors contributing to the success of such an agency, are discussed in the final part.

In Ghana, approximately 60 out of the total 900 occupational accidents recorded by the labour Department over the last decade has been fatal and consequently attributed to a poor Health and Safety practice observed on most construction sites. The aim of the study was to critically investigate the constraints and barriers faced in implementing an effective health and safety practice within the Ghanaian construction industry and also provide suitable recommendations on improving the practice. The research was purely based on a qualitative study conducted through the use of secondary data gathered from extensive literature review. The study specifically explored the standard and approved health and safety legislativeframeworks adopted in most developed countries especially in the UK and Australian construction industry.
