The art of legislation, that had got lost, is reborn in this book from the classic tradition, which conceives the laws like wise and eloquent civic speeches, and the rhetoric as its basic method, of a such way, that the return to the ancient will be a true progress.

This document was the first in the four-volume series, The Life and Philosophy of George Tucker, published by Thoemmes Press in 2004, which is now out of print. Volumes 2-4 were facsimile reprints of, respectively, Essays on Various Subjects of Taste, Morals, and National Policy (1822), A Voyage to the Moon; with some Account of the Manners and Customs, Science and Philosophy, of the People of Morosofia, and other Lunarians (1827), and Essays, Moral and Metaphysical (1860). Volume 1 was a newly-edited version of his autobiography and several of his philosophical essays that appeared in pamphlets or periodicals.

A collection of prefaces, reviews and articles by Americans on American and European fiction. Charted in these three volumes, which span 1776 to 1900, is the movement from anxious defences of the novel as a necessary vehicle of truth and morality to fully-fledged theoretical exfoliations.

This book is designed to introduce readers to the language of contemporary rhetorical studies. The book format is an alphabetized glossary (with appropriate cross listings) of key terms and concepts in contemporary rhetorical studies. An introductory chapter outlines the definitional ambiguities of the central concept of rhetoric itself. The primary emphasis is on the contemporary tradition of rhetorical studies as it has emerged in the discipline of speech communication. Each entry in the glossary ranges in length from a few paragraphs to a short essay of a few pages. Where appropriate, examples are provided to further illustrate the term or concept. Each entry will be accompanied by a list of references and additional readings to direct the reader to other materials of possible interest.
