In Home and Migrant Identity in Dialogical Life Stories of Moroccan and Turkish Dutch, Femke J. Stock explores the multivoiced life stories of Moroccan and Turkish Dutch. Using Dialogical Self Theory for microanalyses of ambivalent narratives on home and belonging, the book challenges common ideas on Muslim migrants.

Media-produced images of people on the move and religion influence our conceptions of migration. These images have varied content and intent. Some provide awareness of the frequently disturbing situation of people who have lost everything, who have had to leave their homes and families and are desperately searching for new possibilities. Others exploit the traumatic topic and the fate of its subjects to entertain their audience with sensational news, which may include images of vast streams of people making their way to a safe haven in new countries. The mediatization of the phenomenon of flight introduces new pictures and perceptions into current debates about migration. It also requires that we interrogate how we view and engage such images and audiovisual documents. Ethical debates about responsibilities combine with questions about the role of religion and its functions. The present volume approaches the subject of migration and religion from an interdisciplinary perspective with a focus on audiovisual representation. The contributions consider feature films, documentaries, television reports, short films, and press photos.

This book discusses the current socio-cultural situation of North African migrants in Europe, and analyzes migration, gender, and identity in their multiple dimensions, consequences and expressions, which range from sociological approaches to culture and literature. The chapters debate the topic of migration and culture from various angles, making this volume a forum where notions of dispossession, cultural identity, and otherness are debated. This book addresses the impact of migration on the formation and transformation of identity and its continuous negotiations. Its ground is the understanding of identity as a complex social phenomenon resulting from constant negotiations between personal conditions, social relationships, and institutional frameworks. Migrations, understood as dynamic processes that do not end when landing in the host country, offer the best conditions to analyze the construction and transformation of social identities in the postcolonial and globalized societies. Searching for novel epistemologies and methodologies, the research questions here addressed are how identity is negotiated in migration processes, and how these negotiations work in contemporary multiethnic Europe. This edited volume brings to the field a novel convergence of theoretical and empirical approaches by gathering together scholars from different countries of Europe and the Mediterranean area, from different disciplines and backgrounds, challenging the traditional discipline division.
