Groundwater management and conservation becomes a more and more important issue in the heavily urbanized coastal zones of the Asia-Pacific region. This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the status of coastal groundwater research in this diverse region. It includes latest methodologies and technologies to assess processes associated with coastal groundwater development. The purpose of this special report is both to inform & advise. Groundwater contributes to the sustainable development of many Asian cities by providing water for domestic, industrial and agricultural uses and regulating ecosystem flows. With its widely diverse and growing populations, burgeoning industrialization and changing weather patterns, the continent of Asia encompasses a vast array of water related problems. This book contains both specially written invited contributions from experts and related articles published previously in the Asian Journal of Water, Environment and Pollution in recent years. Included are some case studies from areas outside Asia, such as Africa and the UK. Subramanian, after completing his PhD in the U.S.A. with a Fulbright Fellowship and teaching for about two years at McGill University, Canada, joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1975. Since then he has been working on global rivers and their impact on coastal and delta processes for over three decades. More than 35 students did their PhD under him over the years and he has authored or co-authored more than 175 technical international publications, including books. He set up academic activities on rivers in South Asia at JNU way back in 1975 and has since been associated with several international institutions/organizations either as member or guest faculty from time to time. He also worked as Emeritus Fellow in Environmental Sciences at JNU. After completion of this term, he is working as an Advisor in Environmental Sciences at Amity University, Noida, India.

In Asia and the Pacific, climate change is now a well-recognised risk to water security but responses to this risk are either under reported, or continue to be guided by the incremental or business as usual approaches. Water policy still tends to remain too narrow and fragmented, compared to the multi-sectoral and cross-scalar nature of risks to water security. What’s more, current water security debates tend to be framed in discipline specific or academic ways, failing to understand decision making and problem-solving contexts within which policy actors and partitioners have to operate on a daily basis. Much of the efforts to date has focussed on assessing and predicting the risks in the context of increasing levels of uncertainty. There is still limited analysis of emerging practices of risks assessment and mitigation in different contexts in Asia and the Pacific. Going beyond the national scales and focussing on several socio-ecological zones, this book captures stories written by engaged scholars on recent attempts to develop cross-sectoral and cross-scaler solutions to assess and mitigate risks to water security across Asia and the Pacific. Identifying lessons from successes and failures, it highlights management and strategic lessons that water and climate leaders of Asia and the Pacific need to consider. This book showcases reflective and analytical thought pieces written by key actors in the climate and water spaces. Several critical socio-ecological zones are covered – from Pakistan in the west to pacific islands in the east. The chapters clearly identify strategies for improvement based on the analysis of emerging responses to climate risks to water security and gaps in current practices. Accounting for approximately 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth, groundwater has the potential to provide societies with tremendous social, economic and environmental benefits and opportunities. However, this natural resource is often poorly understood, and consequently undervalued, mismanaged and even abused. In spite of its overall abundance, groundwater remains vulnerable to over-exploitation and pollution, both of which can have devastating effects on the resource and its availability. In the context of growing water scarcity across many parts of the world, the enormous potential of groundwater and the need to manage it sustainably can no longer be overlooked. The 2022 edition of The United Nations World Water Development Report describes the challenges and opportunities associated with the development, management and governance of groundwater across the world.
