The study is aimed to formulate a regional geopolitical framework based on neogeopolitical ideas and tried to examine the correlation between geography, economic resources, ethnicity and politics.

This book examines India’s Northeast borderland – strategically positioned at the confluence of South Asia, East and Southeast Asia – from the perspective of international relations. The volume interrogates the geopolitics of region-making in both colonial and postcolonial times and traces the transformation of Northeast India from a British strategic frontier into a securitised borderland. It situates the region in transnational interactions both in conflict and cooperation with its immediate neighbouring regions of China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, especially in the context of India’s Look East/Act East policy. The volume paves the way for a new ‘region-state’ framework borne out of the constructivist worldview and offers answers to many conundrums centring border studies. It further delineates approaches to overcoming the present geopolitical and territorial challenges of India’s Northeast with a critical thrust on regional policymaking. This book explores the idea, psychology and political geography of Northeast India as forged by two interrelated but autonomous meta-narratives. First, the politics of conflict inherent in, and therefore predetermined by physical geography, and second, the larger geopolitics that was unfolding during the colonial period. Unravelling the history behind the turmoil engulfing Northeast India, the study contends that certain geographies — most pertinently fertile river valleys and surrounding mountains which feed the rivers — are integral to nature and any effort to disrupt this cohesion will result in conflict. It comprehensively traces the geopolitics of the region since colonial era — in particular the Great Game; the politics that went into the making of the McMahon Line, the Radcliffe Line and the Pemberton Line; the region’s relations with its international neighbours (China, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal); as well as the issue of many formerly non-state-bearing populations awakening to the reality of the modern state. This book is a study of the geopolitical importance of North East India, including the geostrategic threats the region faces from across the borders. It focuses on the background and growth of what the players in the game indulgently call "regionalism" of the provinces. The rugged geography of the land and the idiosyncratic history of the waves of migration to it from near and distant lands beginning in a remote past and continuing ever since--the course had once led to the formation of an all-inclusive body-politic through a process of social integration in this part of the country centuries back--are now found to have gradually created out of nothing a consciousness--as also belligerence--among myriads of resident groups to rediscover their clan identities on the basis of ethnicity, culture and the small territories of their group dominance. Mistrust, a desire to dominate and a never-ending chain of violence slowly became a way of life during the last half a century in almost all the seven States collectively called the North East. This work is a chronicle of investigation into the events that bred a secessionist sentiment and an insular attitude among the different communities and tribes inhabiting the hills and plains of the region. The research undertaken by the author detects a pattern in the social and political developments in various corners of the region during the last few decades. Most of the ills that have been belabouring the Seven Sister States are unique to this region. It provokes a thought, "who is responsible for this mess?" The book examines the slide.

It is a constant refrain from various political leaders that religion and politics should not be mixed together. Notwithstanding this sloganeering, what we find in real life is often quite opposite. The author Kunal Ghosh, connotes on two North-East regions, Tripura and the BAC (Bodo Autonomous Council) area in Assam where a mixture of religion and politics has produced an explosive situation. If religion can be tied up with language and linguistics it would acquire a direct hold on nationality. Globalization has affected a change across the regions of the world and India is no exception. The national economy has become far more integrated with the global economy now. However, there are large parts of the underdeveloped regions that suffer from endemic underdevelopment. The north-eastern region is one such region. The relevance of Globalisation in the context of the North-Eastern Region of India has additional implications in terms of social and political integration. The most important characteristic of the north-eastern region is that all the constituent units (states) are relatively closed ethnic groups. All the states in the region share porous international border. Consequently, both product and factor markets in these states have some international dimension. Given the socioeconomic and geopolitical dimensions in the region, the prevailing pattern of development in these states has also culminated in the form of social unrest and degradation of economic values. This clearly implies that the development policies and programmes have fallen short of meeting the social and economic aspirations of the indigenous population in the region. In this context, the question that arises is how the forces of Globalization and economic growth could be combined together to address the implicit and most relevant questions associated with migration, unemployment and development of trading activities in the perspective of North-Eastern Region of India.
