Against peer competitors, the joint force may face air parity or even localized enemy air overmatch, challenging the assumption of air superiority the joint force has held since the Korean War. This will make maneuver forces vulnerable to air attack by fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned aircraft systems, and cruise missiles. Maneuver forces lack capacity and capability to address these threats and the Army requires a speedy response. Stinger missiles provide a key capability for maneuver forces to defend themselves from aerial observation and attack. However, without direct involvement from senior brigade combat team leaders and effective leader training, these missiles will become dead weight at best or a fratricide in waiting at worst. This manual is a guide for field artillery officers and commanders and staffs of all combat arms. It is concerned with the tactical employment of field artillery. It covers organization, command, and tactical control of field artillery. It includes a discussion of the techniques involved in target intelligence and analysis, field artillery fire planning, and the direction of field artillery fires. It includes a general discussion of the principles, organization and techniques of coordination of fire support with particular emphasis given to field artillery aspects. The employment of field artillery in airborne, amphibious, and other special operations is covered. Where the term artillery is used in this manual, it refers to field artillery. For employment of air defense artillery, see FM 44-1 and other manuals of the 44-series. For additional references, see appendix I. Prior to the mid-1960s, Threat air forces were equipped mainly to provide air defense. Threat aircraft were limited in range and payload, being primarily designed as interceptors. In recent years the mission of the Threat air force has been expanded. Missions now include destroying friendly nuclear reserves and tactical air forces and providing tactical air support of ground forces. Through the 1960s, and with increasing tempo through the 1970s, Threat air forces have been receiving new aircraft and munitions with greatly improved offensive capabilities. Older aircraft have been modified to support new missions. This manual is designed to show how the Stinger platoon will train and fight.
