Excerpt from First Report of the Public Record Commission of New Jersey, 1899 The undersigned, having been appointed by the Governor, July, 1897, the Public Record Commission authorized by Chap ter 105, of the Laws of 1897, entitled An Act in relation to pub lic records in this State, approved April 9, 1897, respectfully re port to your Excellency: Although the Eastern and Western Divisions of New Jer sey were united into one Province, under a Royal Governor, in 1702, each Division retained its own capital, at Perth Amboy and Burlington, respectively, where the records relating to each were kept, and where the Legislature held alternate sessions, as a rule. When the seat of government of the State of New Jersey was located at Trenton, by act of the Legislature passed November 25, 1790, the records of conveyances and of wills were transferred from Burlington and Perth Amboy to Trenton, as soon as proper quarters were provided for them at the new capital. The records of warrants and surveys were retained in the offices of the Registers of East and West Jersey, respectively, at Perth Amboy and Burlington. Excerpt from Third Report of the Public Library Commission of New Jersey, for the Year Ending October 31st, 1902 Of the appropriation of $300 made for the incidental expenses of the Commission during the year, was expended for printing, 4 for postage, and for express charges. In the introduction to the list of first books was a suggestion to those in charge of New Jersey libraries that they procure, where possible, copies of State, county and local histories, and apply to the Commissioners of the State Library for copies of such vol umes of the New Jersey Archives -as can be furnished. The Public Library Commissioners learn that in response to this recommendation but two applications were made for the Archives, although only twenty-six of the more than one hundred libraries in the State have sets of them. The Commissioners, while fully realizing that most of the librarians are busily engaged in the routine work of their institutions, regret that there should be shown such oversight or neglect. New Jersey herewith submits its First Annual Report: The act creating this Commission, being Chapter 156 of the Session Laws of 1908, was approved on April loth, 1908, and the Commission was appointed on May 8th following. The Com missioners met at the State House, at the call of the Governor, on May lgth, took the prescribed oath of office and organized bv the election of one of their number, Willis Fletcher Johnson, as President. Gardner Colby was elected Secretary and Frank B. Jess was elected Chief Examiner. A careful study was made of the law and of the various departments of the State service.
