Fire across the Desert is the history of one of most significant defence undertakings Australia has embarked upon in peacetime. For a third of a century the United Kingdom and Australia co-operated closely in building and operating a major missile testing range which at its peak reached far across our continent. This joint project began under the Chifley government and continued unbroken until 1980. Australia's participation in the joint project was one of the key determinants in shaping our defence policy, and helped us come of age as a scientifically and technologically oriented nation. The joint project indisputably accelerated the formation of a competent body of defence science staff in Australia and was a catalyst for the formation of today's Defence Science and Technology Organisation. Australia's approach to defence has, of necessity, changed fundamentally since the earlier post-war years, but much of the expertise gained on Woomera work has since flowed into current projects in keeping with our national defence priorities. The insights of the desert monks of the fifth and sixth centuries amaze, and startle, readers by their wisdom. Among other things, they teach that the first step in overcoming our sinfulness is an honest perception of things as they are." By arranging these "words" in short Daily readings, Tim Vivian invites modern readers to savor the monks' advice, as did those who collected these sayings, rather than dismiss them as a fascinating but irrelevant bit of history. Tim Vivian is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at California State University, Bakersfield. He is the author of numerous books and articles on early Christian monasticism, including The Life of Antony (with Apostolos N. Athanassakis) and Words to Live By: Journeys in Ancient and Modern Egyptian Monasticism, both published by Cistercian Publications.

While watching this daring girl fly through the sky, Jolene can dream of what it would be like to fly with her, far away from her own troubled home life where her mother struggles with a narcotic addiction. And Addie, who is grieving the loss of her father, finds solace in her online conversations with Jolene, her biggest--and only--fan. Then, one day, it all goes wrong: Addie's engine abruptly stops, and Jolene watches in helpless horror as the ultralight plummets to the ground and the video goes dark. Jolene knows that Addie won't survive long in the extreme summer desert heat. With no one to turn to for help and armed with only a hand-drawn map and a stolen cell phone, it's up to Jolene to find a way to save the Desert Aviator.
