A good police procedural novel set on a tropical island named San Rafael. Who commited murder at the New Year’s Eve party? George and Vanessa own and run a coconut plantation. The island has its share of a snobby social set. The head of that group is Mrs. Lipton-Crumley. Her son Peter is universally despised by everyone. Like his mother he’s an arrogant bigot. He’s also a tempermental ne’er do well who thinks he’s God’s gift to women. None of them can stand him. Vanessa has to invite a number of people she doesn’t like. It evens out because they don’t like her either. Her household staff is divided. Some like her husband George while others take her side. Coming to the big bash are Gerald Balwin, a writer of bad but bestselling romance novels. Patricia Leighteon who is having an affair with George. Frank is also invited. He used to be engaged to Vanessa. When she broke it off a few years back he threatened to kill her.The local Superintendent of police Mark Clifford is also invited along with his wife Greta. Vanessa has a plan. She wants Frank to take infra-red pictures at midnight of the partygoers. She instructed her butler Clarence to shut all the lights down at midnight. She didn’t tell the guests. She’s not in a good mood since that afternoon George told her he wanted a divorce. Later at midnight, out go the lights. A scream. The lights come back. Vanessa’s dead. She was hit over the head with Frank’s tripod holder. Now Clifford has to go from friend to cop. He calls in Inspector Arrow to help in the investigation. The book follows the questioning of the suspects and what happens next. Inspector Arrow is also obsessed with finding out the identity of the hit and run driver who killed a six year old. He thinks it was Peter and goes to great lengths to try and prove it. The book is a good read and never bogs down. If you like to follow investigations along pick this one up. It’s very well done.

Acute Exposure Guideline Levels for Selected Airborne Chemicals, Volume 15 identifies, reviews, and interprets relevant toxicologic and other scientific data for ethyl mercaptan, methyl mercaptan, phenyl mercaptan, tert-octyl mercaptan, lewisite, methyl isothiocyanate, and selected monoisocyanates in order to develop acute exposure guideline levels (AEGLs) for these high-priority, acutely toxic chemicals. AEGLs represent threshold exposure limits (exposure levels below which adverse health effects are not likely to occur) for the general public and are applicable to emergency exposures ranging from 10 minutes (min) to 8 h. Three level--AEGL-1, AEGL-2, and AEGL-3--are developed for each of five exposure periods (10 min, 30 min, 1 h, 4 h, and 8 h) and are distinguished by varying degrees of severity of toxic effects. This report will inform planning, response, and prevention in the community, the workplace, transportation, the military, and the remediation of Superfund sites.

I first saw the brave and beautiful photographs in this remarkable collection at my ranch near Dubois, Wyoming, one night when Lou Jones made a slide presentation to the young trail warriors at the Trial Lawyer's College. Residential Exposure Assessment: A Source Book is the result of a multiyear effort known as the Residential Exposure Assessment Project (REAP) which was initiated by the Society for Risk Analysis and the International Society of Exposure Analysis. This textbook is the primary product of the REAP and it contains contributions from over 30 professionals from a variety of disciplines such as chemistry, biology, physics, engi neering, industrial hygiene, toxicology, pharmacology, and environmental law, reflecting the diverse knowledge and resources necessary to assess and manage potential exposures occurring in and around the home. Expert working groups were organized for each of the 13 chapters to address such issues as U. S. legislation relevant to products used in and around the residence, methods for measuring and modeling exposures across multiple pathways and routes, and distributional data available for key residential exposure factors. This volume is a compendium of information about predictive methods and tools, monitoring methods, data sources, and key variables that characterize exposures in the residential setting. It presents approaches for doing exposure assessments in and around all types of residences. The purpose of the Source Book is to provide a resource for use in educational programs and for "practitioners" of residential exposure assessment. Accordingly, this book is intended for risk assessors, exposure assessors, students, initi ates new to the concept of risk assessment, industrial hygienists assessing health hazards in the home, engineers, and monitoring specialists.

In this thesis a prospective approach was developed to identify and to assess current as well as potentially upcoming product applications with focus on environmental releases and exposures of engineered nanomaterials. The developed product application scenarios were illustrated in case studies on iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. It was shown that despite of prevailing knowledge gaps, reasonable estimations for environmental releases and exposures can be made. This novel approach facilitates the identification of early indicators for precautionary risk management measures and among them benign by design concepts in technology and product development.
