The question of how effective political tools actually are is among the most hotly debated in contemporary IR theory. There is no unanimity how to even measure the effectiveness and impact different political measures produce. This book comprehensively introduces social science students and scholars to the various fields of effectiveness and impact research in the study of international relations.

The Third United Nations Conference on the Exploitation and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III) was held from 19 to 30 July 1999 in Vienna. The UNISPACE III report is an action plan to harness the power of outer space activities for the benefit of all humankind in the twenty-first century. It calls for specific actions , and describes issues and concerns related to eight main themes: protecting the Earth's environment, global communications, the Global Positioning System (GPS), education and training opportunities for youth, spin-offs and commercial benefits, the promotion of international cooperation, information needs and the global approach, and furthering knowledge and building capacity.

This CSIS Report examines the strategic implications of manned space exploration. The current phase of exploration is coming to an end, and nations are seeking the next step. The decisions of the United States and its partners on the future of space exploration will determine the strategic situation in space. There are difficult issues to consider in moving ahead: the target of exploration beyond LEO, the balance between manned and unmanned programs, the future of partnership and cooperation in space, and the ultimate fate of the ISS. How Western space powers answer these questions will determine both the pace and the future direction of exploration in space.

Over the last two decades the expanding role of Southern countries as development partners has led to tectonic shifts in global development ideas, practices, norms and actors. Researchers are faced with new questions around identity, power and positionality in global development. Researching South-South Development Cooperation examines this rapidly growing and complex phenomenon, asking to what extent existing assumptions, conceptual frameworks and definitions of 'development' need to be reframed in the context of researching this new landscape. This interdisciplinary book draws on voices from across the Global South and North to explore the epistemological and related methodological challenges and opportunities associated with researching South-South development cooperation, asking what these trends mean for the politics of knowledge production. This open access handbook analyses the role of development cooperation in achieving the 2030 Agenda in a global context of 'contested cooperation'.
