This timely book explores an eco-feminist approach to dance movement psychotherapy, with an emphasis on the posthuman possibilities of differently enabled bodies and fostering social, political and environmental justice. Using the lenses of posthumanism and new materialism, this book examines the points of convergence among dance movement psychotherapy, eco-psychotherapy and critical disability studies. It maps out the experience of building care, empathy and kinship and explores ecologically informed, embodied practices and research while offering new perspectives on these practices. This dissertation’s purpose is to concretise pedagogical concepts that help us think about the voices and positions of children in vulnerable situations in contemporary contexts of educating and researching. What matters when thinking about children’s voices, roles and positions in pedagogical and research spaces entangled with our own roles, positions and ethics? This doctoral study is built around four intra-active encounters within pedagogical spaces in Flanders where we bring in a posthuman reconceptualisation of voice to understand and value the entangled, collective and supported ways in which children become present in research. Each intra-active encounter sheds light on methodological and ethico-epistemo-ontological aspects of assembling children’s (posthuman) voices in research and possible creative and participatory ways of doing so. We describe five helpful movements when engaging with and listening to children in intra-active pedagogical and research encounters. Five movements that concretise listening to children’s voices in vulnerable situations and have the potential to transform an encounter into intra-active encounters of genuinely listening. This dissertation will be thought-provoking for practitioners in education and welfare contexts as well as for students and researchers that have the intention of doing research with (vulnerable) children in pedagogical contexts.

“What when we have grown up?” dives into Marieke Vandecasteele’s doctoral research trajectory in a space between art and science. From her own position as a family mem­ber, the researcher starts to collect experiences of families of people with a label and makes trips to others who made visual or auditory creations about their sibling with a label. This book is a patchwork consisting of ‘patches’ rather than ‘chapters’, where different studies are stitched together. These patches take very different forms: sometimes through images, sometimes through film, sometimes through audio, sometimes through written texts, … In an affective way, it always opens up new ways of looking at and collaborating with families of people with a label. Making-thinking-doing is central: starting from making visual or/and auditory creations and relational encounters, com­bined with posthumanist literature, exciting cross-pollinations emerge that make space for other forms of knowledge in academia. This creative research can inspire practioners in welfare contexts as well students and researchers who are searching what research-creation practices can be(come) in the context of supporting families with labels.
