A collection of essays from the English Language Teaching in Latin America website, collected and edited by Paul Davies between 2018 and 2020.

This book investigates new English language policies and initiatives which have been introduced and implemented across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela. Chapters are organized around three themes. Chapters in the first section critically examine newly-implemented English language policies, as well as factors that contribute to and prevent the implementation of such policies. Chapters in the second section describe and analyze current teacher preparation and teacher development initiatives, in addition to the challenges and opportunities associated with such initiatives. Finally, the third section features school- and classroom-based research designed to investigate the status of English language teaching and the implementation of innovative programs. All authors have a first-hand understanding of the South American context and draw on references and resources which originate beyond Inner Circle countries. The book showcases examples of innovation and success in a variety of complex contexts and will serve as a starting point for researchers, as well as being of interest to students, policymakers and stakeholders.

In the decade from the early 1960s to the early 1970s, Latin American authors found themselves writing for a new audience in both Latin America and Spain and in an ideologically charged climate as the Cold War found another focus in the Cuban Revolution. The writers who emerged in this energized cultural moment--among others, Julio Cortázar (Argentina), Guillermo Cabrera Infante (Cuba), José Donoso (Chile), Carlos Fuentes (Mexico), Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia), Manuel Puig (Argentina), and Mario Varas Llosa (Peru)--experimented with narrative forms that sometimes bore a vexed relation to the changing political situations of Latin America. For many decades, English language educators across the world have been locked in a paradigm of ESL/EFL/ESD methods that have circumvented the growth of any pedagogical will for Immersion in English (IE) or the Sustained Use of English (SUE) in speech environments where other languages challenge English-in-use and the preparation of teachers of English to facilitate IE or SUE in classroom praxis. There is an opportunity to advance this scholarship from an international perspective to build a distinct post-method pedagogy for English language teaching in the Caribbean and other global teaching-learning contexts. The teaching/learning/use of English plays a key role in the geopolitical South. It is important to consider how players in different contexts are impacted by English since globalization and one of its agent, internationalization of higher education, have more positive impacts on the "North" than in the "South" mainly due to a linguistic bias which favors English-speaking countries and those which, despite speaking other native languages, adopted English as the language of instruction. So as to see how these forces are interpreted in the geopolitical South this book offers a glimpse of how English is taught, learned, used and seen in different contexts in Latin America and in the global "South".
