Excerpt from Elementary Exercises for Students in Materia Medica and Pharmacy A laboratory manual for a course in Materia Medica and Pharmacy is not easy to prepare. The difficulty is, not so much in the matter of what to include, but What to exclude. For stu dents it would seem desirable that an opportunity should be afforded to examine first hand and to make preparations from at least some of the drugs which they are told about in the lectures and read of in the text books, and which they, later, are to use in their practice. Veterinarians, even more than physicians perhaps, compound their prescriptions. On this account, examples of the various pharmacopoeial preparations, as well as many unofficial ones, have be'en included. Probably in no other laboratory course is there as much care and accuracy required and this, in itself, is a valuable experience for the student. The formulary, at the end of the book, is composed of useful prescriptions. Some of them have been developed from our own experience, while the others have been collected from various sources - due credit having been given, so far as possible. This feature has been introduced primarily to give the students prac tice in compounding prescriptions. It is believed, however, that when the student becomes a practitioner, he may find many of these prescriptions of direct advantage in his practice. Finally, as stated in the previous edition, little originality can be claimed for this work; the writer has drawn freely.
