Excerpt from Elementary Economic Geography There is a growing demand from the schools for textbooks dealing with commerce and industry. The difficulties which lie in the way of presenting these subjects to immature pupils are many: 1. The facts to be presented are found largely in the form of tables of statistics which change from year to year. The meaning and trend of these changing figures must be seized and stated in the form of safe generalizations. 2. The facts and principles involved must be organized according to their physical relations, which are geographic, and their human relations, which are economic. 3. Clear and impressive pictures must be drawn of natural conditions and human occupations, as they exist in well-defined regions and among peoples of various degrees of culture. 4. The whole must be made sufficiently interesting to attract a large proportion of schoolboys and schoolgirls. In this book the facts and principles of industry and commerce are organized upon a geographic basis. The limits implied in the term commercial geography are expanded into the broader and more significant conception of economic geography, or a study of the ways in which different peoples in different regions get a living. Part I, Human Economics and their Natural Foundations, forms a general introduction to a science which takes a point of view not yet familiar to the student. The meaning of economy and economic geography is illustrated by detailed stories about seven of the simpler peoples, whose natural environments differ as widely as possible. Excerpt from The Principles of Economic Geography This volume attempts to give little more than an outline of the principles of economic geography in a readable form. The scope of the subject is liberally interpreted in the belief that the deeper and wider the foundations the surer the edifice that can be built. For this reason several matters are touched on which are not often dealt with in works on economic geography. Statistical matter, as far as possible, has been avoided as out of keeping with the aim of the book. Moreover, statistics for recent years, even when available, do not illustrate the normal features of production and trade, owing to the dislocation caused by the war. Excerpt from Materials for the Study of Elementary Economics In the choice of the materials the editors have been guided by actual classroom experiment. The nucleus of the book was originally printed as a series of bulletins which have for three formed a part of the reading required of beginning students in economics at the University of Chicago. During this time unsatisfactory selections have been eliminated and much new matter has been added. Copies of the bulletins have been submitted for criticism to teachers in several other institutions. The volume which now appears may thus be said already in a measure to have demonstrated its usefulness as an aid in college instruction. Excerpt from Elementary Economics There never was a time when men needed to think so seriously about the problems of national welfare as the present. It is plainer than ever that this is an economic question, that is, a question of economizing. It is the purpose of this book to examine the economic foundations of our national welfare and to point out some of the simpler and more direct methods of strengthening these foundations, to the end that our nation and all nations that aim at democracy and justice may prosper more and more.
