GERN (Groupement Européen de Recherches sur les Normativités) is a large consortium of scientific researchers in the domain of deviance and social control, more precisely studying delinquency, penal institutions, public policies of security and the importance of penal questions in society. Today GERN is a scientific network present in ten European countries and abroad, uniting researchers of different disciplines.00This is the fifth volume stemming from the annual doctoral conferences organized by the GERN in September 2016 in Dortmund, Germany. The selected theme for this Summer School was "Deviance and Crime - Social Control, Criminal Justice, and Criminology in Europe"; reflecting the variety of theoretical frameworks and methodologies covered by the current PhD theses in the field of criminal justice and deviance as well as fresh and new perspectives on deviant and criminal careers, on the history of restorative justice and on crime as the central theoretical concept in criminology.

The New European Criminology gathers together leading criminologists from all over Europe to consider crime and responses to crime within and across national borders. For the first time it allows students to experience the most exciting work in European criminology and to compare approaches to crime in different parts of Europe. This first volume of a two-volume collection of essays provides a comprehensive examination of the idea of social control in the history of Europe. The uniqueness of these volumes lies in two main areas. First, the contributors compare methods of social control on many levels, from police to shaming, church to guilds. Second, they look at these formal and informal institutions as two-way processes. Unlike many studies of social control in the past, the scholars here examine how individuals and groups that are being controlled necessarily participate in and shape the manner in which they are regulated. Hardly passive victims of discipline and control, these folks instead claimed agency in that process, accepting and resisting -- and thus molding -- the controls under which they functioned. Originally published in 1974, Deviance and Social Control represents a collection of original papers first heard at the annual meeting of the British Sociological Association in 1971. They reveal how the American approach to deviance has been taken up by British sociologists, and revised and modified, and they explore possibilities of extending and strengthening the subject, for instance through comparative analysis or by examining issues which bear on deviant behaviour.

The issue of the politics of criminology is a significant theme in academic debate, policy implementation, and legal reform. Against administrative criminologists who have been criticized as "technicians of the State" or "apologists for criminal justice," functioning primarily to "manage" the consequences and conflict of structural inequalities in advanced democratic states, this book brings policy back to what it was, a sociological study of the entire social framework of the inequalities of power, wealth, and authority, which is the result of class relations of industrial society.
