Money represents more than the paper it's printed on. It may be the embodiment of your time, your talents, and your commitments. It buys the food you eat, the house you sleep in, the caryou drive, and the clothes you wear. It also helps provide you with the lifestyle you want tolive once you retire. You have spent a lifetime earning it, spending it, and hopefully, accumulating it. When the timecomes for retirement, you want your money to provide you with a comfortable lifestyle andstable income after your working days are done. You might also have other desires, such astraveling, purchasing property, or moving to be closer to your family (or farther away). You mayalso want your assets to provide for your loved ones after you are gone. The truth is that it takes more than just money to fulfill those needs and desires. This guide provides information on retiree destinations around the world, all based on research conducted by the authors and hands-on testimonies from each region. It consists of 10 chapters, starting with a general overview of retiree migration patterns, which examines the factors retirees consider when deciding on a destination. The following nine chapters each cover one particular region of the world that is attracting retirees. Mini-profiles of retiree migrants in each chapter include anecdotes and experiences from diverse destinations. The reader will hear, for example, from an American luxuriating on a Spanish island; a Brit building homes in the mountains and coast of BC, Canada; a New York filmmaker reinventing in Cuenca, Ecuador; and British skiers retiring to “encore careers” in the French Alps. Chapters also include “destination profiles”—short vignettes that analyze retirement from the destination perspective, again based on personal interviews with key stakeholders from a national, regional and local perspective.

A Baby Boomer and thirty-year veteran of public school teaching and administration, the author set out to disprove the assumption, commonly held by her work colleagues, that retirement must be either a Life sentence or a Get out of Jail Free Pass. She was inspired by Gretchin Rubens' Happiness Project and the work of Robert Raines on creative aging to construct her own Retirement Project for discovering the pathway to personal happiness and fulfillment that would carry her into the elder season of life. Beginning the day she walked out of her office for the last time, she took the next twelve months to work on ten resolutions that she had identified as critical to the accomplishment of her vision for a meaningful and purposeful retirement. Over the months, she gained valuable insight into her past and pursued new pathways and interests for the future. In the end, she concluded that retirement is more like a journey than a destination; more like a construction project than a memory garden; more like a beginning than an ending. The book chronicles the steps in her journey into the first year.
