“PROLOGUE THE SEARCH FOR GOOD WATER On November 7, 1829, a New Mexican trader named Antonio Armijo led a 60-man party on the first leg of what became a historic deviation from the Great Spanish Trail route to Los Angeles. That deviation resulted in the discovery of Las Vegas. By Christmas Day, Armijo’s caravan had crossed southern Utah and moved into the northwest corner of Arizona. The caravan camped near what is now Littlefield — a sleepy hamlet about 100 miles northeast of present Las Vegas. Armijo dispatched a reconnaissance party to look for a possible shortcut west, and to look for water. A member of the party was a young Mexican scout named Rafael Rivera. Three surveyors in the late 19th century were so attracted to the area's desert beauty that they named it "the Paradise Valley." Starting in the 1920s, adobe homes were constructed in various revival styles. In 1936, the Camelback Inn resort set a high-quality standard with an inviting and relaxed character. Other guest lodges arrived, including the Hermosa Inn and the El Chorro Lodge. The 1950s brought more luxurious resorts, including the Paradise Valley Racquet Club and the Mountain Shadows Resort. With the threat of Phoenix or Scottsdale annexing the area, the citizens started debating incorporation in 1949 and were successful in 1961. Churches, schools, town facilities, and single-family homes followed. Numerous town ordinances were adopted to preserve a quiet, desert lifestyle such as burying all utilities, restrictive zoning, and hillside preservation.

As title implies the poems in Desert Notes are just that; short notes each fitting a page. In four chapters the journey through desert unfolds. The landscape changes little at the start of each day leading the reader either to a stopover at one of many oases or to the very end of existence. Paradises are flickering with probing images in minds prone to exaggeration and death is a constant companion. The author attempts to balance both in a landscape humbled by scarcity. From time to time humanity steps in with self adoring ego to take into possession all left behind by gods. In a land scorched by sun anything is possible; the conquest, the perils of indignity, and stagnation in between. The authors intention was to pay a tribute to man however small endeavours he undertakes and portray the imminent loneliness of his dreams. The journey takes only 102 pages no more than an hour of the readers time.

Resort City in the Sunbelt is a non-sensationalistic, scholarly account of Las Vegas from the building of the Hoover Dam to the construction of the MGM Grand Hotel. Historian Eugene Moehring provides a balanced view of the city’s urban development. Although a unique city in many ways, Las Vegas has displayed characteristics common to other sunbelt cities across the western United States—including underfunded social services, low-density urbanization with a heavy reliance upon automobiles, a sluggish response to problems within minority communities, a preference for efficient, business-like government, and a mania for low taxes. The gaming and resort aspects are fully considered, but Moehring emphasizes the city as part of the continually expanding sunbelt.
