This book proposes an overall framework of communication (including translation) that follows CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis)/CL (Critical Linguistics) principles; it devises an analytic tool for the study of transitivity in translation along Hallidayian-functionalist lines; and it incorporates a contrastive corpus of 52 speeches made before the European Parliament in English and Spanish on 9th March 1993 together with their corresponding translations. Both sentence and textual levels become units of analysis. Also, quantitative and qualitative methods are applied. The author analyses the various types of transitivity shifts at sentence level. She also shows that these shifts have contextual effects. Another focus of this study is to present how certain transitivity shifts group together.

Given that the dissemination of enlightened thought in Europe was mostly effected through translations, the present collection of essays focuses on how its cultural adaptation took place in various national contexts. For the first time, the theoretical model of ‘cultural transfer’ (Espagne/Werner) is applied to the eighteenth century: The intercultural dynamics of the Enlightenment become manifest in the transformation process between the original and target cultures, be it by way of acculturation, creative enhancement, or misunderstanding. Resulting in shifts of meaning, translations offer a key not just to contemporary translation practice but to the discursive network of the European Enlightenment in general. The case studies united here explore both how translations contributed to the transnational standardisation of certain key concepts, values and texts, and how they reflect national specifications of enlightened discourses. Hence, the volume contributes to Enlightenment studies, at least as much as to historical translation studies.

Europäische Richtlinien, die die Traditionen der westeuropäischen Mitgliedstaaten respektieren, sollen im Rahmen der «Osterweiterung» der EU dazu dienen, in den neuen Mitgliedstaaten arbeitsrechtliche Mindeststandards abzusichern, nicht zuletzt dank der Gewährung von Informations- und Anhörungsrechten der Arbeitnehmer. Führt dies zum Transfer eines bestimmten «europäischen Modells» der Arbeitnehmerbeteiligung an betrieblichen Entscheidungsprozessen? Es gibt diesbezüglich kein einheitliches westeuropäisches Modell. Die Auseinandersetzung über die Harmonisierung von Arbeitnehmerrechten ist durch konkurrierende nationale Traditionen geprägt. Die hier vorgestellten ausgewählten Länderstudien belegen, dass der Trend in Richtung rein gewerkschaftlicher Interessenvertretungen geht. Gerät damit das britische und nicht das deutsche Modell zum Orientierungspunkt einer Ausgestaltung des «sozialen Dialogs» in Europa? Der vorliegende Band, der Beiträge von Arbeitsrechtlern, Sozialwissenschaftlern sowie von Vertretern von Unternehmerverbänden und Gewerkschaften enthält, soll Orientierungspunkte für die Beantwortung dieser Frage liefern. Les directives européennes, qui respectent les traditions des Etats-membres d'Europe occidentale, doivent servir, dans le cadre de l'élargissement de l'UE, à garantir des standards minimaux en droit social dans les pays nouvellement intégrés, notamment en accordant des droits d'information et de consultation aux salariés. Cela conduit-il au transfert d'un certain type de « modèle européen » de participation des salariés aux processus décisionnels des entreprises ? Or, il n'existe pas en la matière de modèle unique en Europe de l'Ouest. La discussion relative à l'harmonisation des droits des salariés en Europe est donc marquée par l'existence parallèle de différentes traditions nationales. Les études présentées dans cet ouvrage révèlent que la tendance est aux systèmes de représentation d'émanation syndicale. Ne serait-ce donc pas plutôt le système britannique que le système allemand qui servirait désormais de référence dans l'élaboration d'un « dialogue social » en Europe ? Des spécialistes du droit du travail et des sciences sociales ainsi que des représentants d'organisations patronales et syndicales, proposent ici des points de repère pour analyser ce phénomène.

During the last 15 years, the concept of administrative culture has won increasing interest in administrative science and practice. Besides the "hardware" composed of its legal and organizational structure, public administration is marked by the "software," unwritten norms, values, and orientations. The culture component is essential for successful co-operation between different institutions, because ignoring the cultural background is often a reason for misunderstandings. This book clarifies the conceptual and methodological approach of administrative culture. Furthermore, it delivers the administrative culture passport of nine European countries - traditional and new EU member states - and of Turkey.

Cet ouvrage collectif, issu d'un colloque international pluridisciplinaire organisé en 2009 par le Centre de recherches pluridisciplinaires multilingues de l'Université Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense, croise les approches de la philosophie, de l'histoire et des cultures juridiques ; il interroge les représentations et contextualisations, sur la longue durée historique, de la raison d'Etat, ou plutôt des raisons d'Etats, ainsi que ses recompositions contemporaines, en particulier les procédures de l'Etat de droit face à l'état d'urgence et aux « circonstances exceptionnelles ». Ce livre contient 12 articles en français, un en allemand ainsi qu'un en anglais.
