The mission of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) is to collect and disseminate global visible and infrared (IR) cloud-cover data and other specialized meteorological, oceanographic, and solar-geophysical information to support defense operations and other high-priority programs. Timely data from two primary satellites in low Earth orbit are supplied to the Air Force Weather Agency, the Navy Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and finally to deployed tactical users, both military and civilian.
