This book is written in two parts, namely General Issues in Construction Industry and Various Aspects of Research in Construction Industry. It consists of a collection of ten articles related to studies on managing construction in developing countries. The articles were written by several authors who are specialised in the built environment such as construction planning, management and managing quality. All articles attempt to focus on the issues, current developments and analysis that can benefit those who are involved in the built environment. They offer a fresh insight into how the management aspect of construction can and should be enriched, enhanced and ultimately empowered to act as a vital tool in delivering construction projects within their intended objectives. This book aims to act as a gateway for students, academicians and practitioners of the industry to learn about innovative measures and steps currently being undertaken in the developing world with regards to construction management. Economic growth and socio-economic development are particuliarly important for developing countries, and the construction industry plays a central role in driving both of these. Traditionally the issues faced have been assumed to be merely offshoots of those encountered in industrialised nations and are usually discussed only in this context. In addition, research in construction management and economics has generally failed to take proper account of the unique or highly emphasised characteristics of the industries in developing countries, or their economic and social environment. This volume challenges underlying assumptions and focuses on the distinct characteristics of construction in developing countries. In so doing it considers the issues from the perspective of the developing countries themselves to present a strong contemporary picture for researchers. It forms a companion volume to New Perspectives on Construction in Developing Countries which provides an update on the generic subjects relating to the construction industry in developing countries, and covers new concepts and issues.

Volume thirteen in Current Topics in Management is focused on global perspectives on strategy, behavior, and performance. Originally presented at the 2008 ICAM (International Conference on Advances in Management) conference, these contributions provide a substantial basis for such thematic developments. Th e series continues to resist pressures for specialized research on narrow topics within some temporary niche. It transcends narrow disciplines and national boundaries to provide management research with a universalistic fl avor. There are thousands of books and hundreds of academic and practitioner journals and magazines about the general subject of management. Each has its own subculture and concerns. The thirteenth volume of Current Topics is devoted to expanding and integrating ideas, research, and experiences that cuts across these specialties. Th e editor recognizes that it is important to respect the natural interdependencies that constitute management, but doing so requires the fi eld to rise above narrow specialization and niche research. For an outstanding vision of the frontiers of management research and emerging topics such as the sub-prime crisis and recession this volume is an excellent place to begin. Among other topics, the volume highlights the economic roots of management--the increase in visibility and perceived importance of accounting in the banking sector and how accounting is signifi cant beyond its technical roles. It provides new insights into how management accounting practices, along with other organizational systems, play an important role in questioning, visualizing, analyzing, and measuring implemented strategies. It understands accounting's important infl uence on strategic decision-making, and its role in legitimating action. Cumulatively, these contributions integrate theory, research, and practice, while sharing ideas and insights from diff erent national, cultural, and research traditions.

This book presents a new approach to the issue of project management, showing how it can be approached through the lens of sustainability. The nature of sustainable project management is not only to achieve economic goals, but also environmental and social ones. Considering project management from the perspective of sustainability is very important because sustainable development cannot keep up with the pace and scale of accumulation of ecological and social problems. The natural potential of the Earth is quickly running low. The global equilibrium between the Earth’s ecosystems, which have developed for millions of years, and the human world of production and consumption, becomes disrupted. The focus is on a functional approach to the subject, allowing management and business to implement the methodology discussed. Topics discussed include sustainable planning, sustainable organizing, sustainable leading and sustainable controlling. The authors use their combined experience in the area to inform their novel approach. The book will be especially useful for people who are project managers, members of project teams and other project stakeholders. It may also be a useful reference for scientists and students studying the fields of management, IT and business.
