A foreword for the present workshop proceedings cannot be provided without first looking at the larger context of the AMI conference in which the workshops were organized. The AMI 2007 conference has roots in preceding events, but in many respects, AMI can be called a novel conference format and hence a premiere. Among the several aims that inspired and shaped this new conference format, the following two are particularly worth considering: (1) to provide a forum for the ambient intel- gence flavor of research on the Post-PC era of computer science, complementing the ubiquitous computing and pervasive computing flavors emphasized by alrea- existing conferences; (2) to offer an event that attracts contributions from all over the globe yet emphasizes European strengths – with particular reference to the Infor- tion Society Technologies (IST) branch of the EU research framework programs (FPs), which carry the same label as the conference. The workshop organization chairs reflected these unique characteristics of the new AMI conference series in the call for workshop proposals using two corresponding measures: (1) by particularly soliciting workshops on in-depth topics corresponding to the above-mentioned ambient intelligence flavor of Post-PC research; (2) by offering two different workshop threads: one ‘usual’ thread for advanced topics (called “SW workshops”) and one thread for workshops related to concrete EU FP6 and FP7 p- jects (called “EU workshops”).

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the AmI 2011 Workshops, held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in November 2011. The 55 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on aesthetic intelligence: designing smart and beautiful architectural spaces; ambient intelligence in future lighting systems; interactive human behavior analysis in open or public spaces; user interaction methods for elderly, people with dementia; empowering and integrating senior citizens with virtual coaching; integration of AMI and AAL platforms in the future internet (FI) platform initiative; ambient gaming; human behavior understanding: inducing behavioral change; privacy, trust and interaction in the internet of things; doctoral colloquium.

Ambient intelligence (AmI) was established in the late 1990s as a recent paradigm for electronic environments for the timeframe of 2010–2020. AmI is essentially an elabo- tion of Mark Weiser’s vision of ubiquitous computing. Weiser was aiming at a novel mobile computing infrastructure integrated into the networked environment of people. AmI is the idea of a technology that will become invisibly embedded in our natural s- roundings, present whenever we need it, enabled by simple and effortless interaction, attuned to all our senses, adaptive to users, context-sensitive, and autonomous. AmI refers to smart electronic environments that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. Since its adoption the vision has grown and fully developed, bec- ing quite influential in the development of novel ideas for information processing and new concepts for multi-disciplinary fields including electrical engineering, computer science, industrial design, user interfaces, and cognitive sciences. The AmI system - fords a basis for new paradigms of technological innovation within a multi-dimensional society. The added value of the AmI vision is the fact that the large-scale integration of electronics into the environment allows the actors, i. e. , people and objects, to collaborate with their surroundings in a natural measure. This is directly related to the increasing societal demand for communication and the exchange of information.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the workshops of the First European Conference on Ambient Intelligence, AmI 2007, held in Darmstadt, Germany, in November 2007. The papers are organized in topical sections on AI methods for ambient intelligence, evaluating ubiquitous systems with users, model driven software engineering for ambient intelligence applications, smart products, ambient assisted living, human aspects in ambient intelligence, Amigo, WASP as well as the cojoint PERSONA and SOPRANO workshops and the KDubiq workshop.

Our homes anticipate when we want to wake up. Our computers predict what music we want to buy. Our cars adapt to the way we drive. In today’s world, even washing machines, rice cookers and toys have the capability of autonomous decision-making. Ambient intelligence (AmI) is an element of pervasive computing that brings smartness to living and business environments to make them more sensitive, adaptive, autonomous and personalized to human needs. It refers to intelligent interfaces that recognise human presence and preferences, and adjust smart environments to suit their immediate needs and requirements. The key factor is the presence of intelligence and decision-making capabilities in IoT environments. The underlying technologies include pervasive computing, ubiquitous communication, seamless connectivity of smart devices, sensor networks, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and context-aware human-computer interaction (HCI). AmI applications and scenarios include smart homes, autonomous self-driving vehicles, healthcare systems, smart roads, the industry sector, smart facilities management, the education sector, emergency services, and many more. The advantages of AmI in the IoT environment are extensive. However, as for any new technological paradigm, there are also many open issues and limitations. This book discusses the AmI element of the IoT and the relevant principles, frameworks, and technologies in particular, as well as the benefits and inherent limitations. It reviews the state of the art of current developments relating to smart spaces and AmI-based IoT environments. This volume contains the proceedings of the Second European Ambient Intelligence (AmI) Conference. The conference took place in Erlangen and Nürnberg, November 19–22, 2008. The concept of ambient intelligence (AmI) was introduced in the late 1990s as a novel paradigm for electronic environments for the years 2010-2020. It builds on the early visions of Weiser describing a novel mobile computing infrastr- ture integrated into the networked environment of people. According to early defi- tions, AmI refers to smart electronic surroundings that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. The added value for the multi-dimensional society we are living in lies in the fact that the large-scale integration of microelectronics into the environment enables people and objects to interact with this environment in a se- less, trustworthy, and natural manner. Obviously, AmI solutions deliver a new quality of communication and information exchange, they help people to fulfill their professional tasks with increasing efficiency, enable the older generation to stay much longer in the privacy of their own homes and the younger one to lead a healthy and responsible life. Smart mobile devices navigate in private apartments as well as in complex public or industrial environments in order to support people with a broad variety of services.
