This book collates evidence from behavioural, brain imagery and stroke-patient studies, to discuss how cognitive and neural processes are responsible for language.

These papers emphasize the development of detailed models of normal cognitive functioning through the analysis of cognitive impairment. They differ, however, in terms of the cognitive domain investigated and the dominant methodology of the reported research. Areas examined include imagery, attention, memory, and language. A substantial portion of the papers presented address language processing because research on language disorders has been a major focus of interest in cognitive neuropsychological research.

Language is one of our most precious and uniquely human capacities, so it is not surprising that research on its neural substrates has been advancing quite rapidly in recent years. Damage to the brain can impair language in many different ways, severely harming some linguistic functions whilst sparing others. To achieve some understanding of the apparently bewildering diversity of language disorders, it is necessary to interpret impaired linguistic performance by relating it to a model of normal linguistic performance.
