Epilepsy is one of the most familiar chronic neurological diseases and is a common yet challenging presentation in veterinary surgeries. This book covers seizure pathogenesis, classifications, diagnostic investigations, emergency treatments and longer term treatments, with a large section on pharmacological intervention. Filling a considerable gap in the veterinary literature, it includes tables and charts for quick reference during emergencies. Seizures can be very distressing to animals and owners, yet not all seizures are the result of epilepsy, a neurological condition. This book discusses how to distinguish between epileptic and non-neurological seizures, and provides case studies to illustrate different occurrences of epilepsy.

Why Is It Important to Keep a Seizure Log? There are several important reasons for keeping a seizure diary - to aid in diagnosis, to help you and your vet to make decisions about treatment, and to help you spot patterns and triggers. Diagnosis & Treatment Decisions Writing down what happens before, during and after a seizure can help your vet identify the type of seizures that your dog is experiencing. This is important because some medications are more effective for certain types of seizures. Keeping a record also helps you and your vet decide whether medications are effective or need changing. If seizures get better, stay the same, or get worse after a medication change everyone needs to know. A log will also help you track side effects from medications that you give your dog. All this information helps you and your vet make informed decisions about treatment. This journal allows you to keep all your notes and questions together and to share them when you take your dog to appointments. Patterns & Triggers Writing down the time, where your dog was and what was going on prior to a seizure may help you spot patterns and identify potential triggers. Some common triggers are listed on the seizure record pages as tick box options, and there are spaces to record your own. There is also a notes section for your own thoughts and observations. Identifying triggers could help you make changes that may help your dog. Keeping records will also help you see if any changes you introduce are making a difference. Make record keeping one less thing to worry about by keeping all your dog's information together in a journal specifically designed for epilepsy management.

Seizures are one of the most common neurological conditions in dogs. The scientific term for seizure is “ictus.” A seizure may also be called a convulsion, attack, or fit and is a temporary involuntary disturbance of normal brain function that is usually accompanied by uncontrollable muscle activity. They occur when too much electrical activity is going on in the outer layers of a dog’s brain called the cortex, which is responsible for thought, memory, sensation, and movement. Seizures are the result of muscle responses to an abnormal nerve-signal burst from the brain. They are symptoms of an underlying neurological dysfunction. Toxic substances and metabolic or electrolyte abnormalities and/or imbalances cause an uncoordinated firing of neurons in the cerebrum of the brain, creating seizures from mild petit mals to severe grand mals.
