Excerpt from Can We Be Equal and Excellent Too? It was all in fun, and the culprit turned out to be one of my best students. But the phrases ground themselves into my mind. Lurking behind the words were some interesting social meanings. It was not hard to detect in the educational world of the 1930's echoes Of the same equalitarianism that rang in those phrases. The subject has never ceased to interest me. This is a book about excellence, more particularly about the conditions under which excellence is possible in our kind Of society; but it is also - inevitably - a book about equality, about the kinds of equality that can and must be honored, and the kinds that cannot be forced. Such a book must raise some questions which Americans have shown little inclination to discuss rationally. What are the characteristic difficulties a democracy encounters in pursuing excellence? Is there a way out of these difficulties? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Other Things Being Equal Oh, yes I forgot. Dr. Kemp, are you acquainted with the Queen of Sheba and her doughty knight Louis, surnamed Arnold? She paused a moment as the parties acknowledged the curious introduction, and then broke in rather breathlessly: There, Doctor, I shall leave you with royalty; do not let your republican ignorance forget her proper title. Mr. Arnold, Mrs. Merrill is beckoning to us will you come? And with a naive, superbly impish look at Ruth, she drew Arnold away before he could murmur an excuse. At the impertinent words the soft, rich blood suffused Ruth's face. Will you sit here awhile and wait for Mr. Arnold, or shall we go and see the orchids? The pleasant, deep voice broke in upon her confusion and calmed her self-consciousness. She raised her eyes to the dark, clever face above her; it was a strong, rather than a handsome face. From the broad sweep of the forehead above the steady scrutiny of the gray eyes, to the grave lip and firm chin under the dark.
