Students learn when they are activity engaged and thinking in class. The activities in this book are the primary classroom materials for teaching Calculus 1, using the POGIL method. Each activity leads students to discovery of the key concepts by having them analyze data and make inferences. The result is an I can do this attitude, increased retention, and a feeling of ownership over the material.

Workshop Calculus: Guided Exploration with Review integrates a review of basic pre-calculus concepts with the study of concepts encountered in a traditional first semester calculus course - functions, limits, derivatives, integrals, and an introduction to integration techniques. This two-course sequence is designed for students who are not prepared to enter Calculus I, but who need to develop mathematical skills for further study in the social sciences, natural sciences, or mathematics. The primary goal of the course is to help students develop firm conceptual understandings of the fundamental ideas in calculus, thereby enabling them to use calculus in other disciplines. Essential elements of Workshop Calculus include the emphasis on applications to enhance student motivation and the use of computers amd graphing calculators to help explore mathematical ideas.

"First-Year Calculus as Taught by R.L. Moore is intended to facilitate student learning through IBL, or Inquiry-Based Learning, the essence of the Moore Method. Based on notes taken by the author while studying with R.L. Moore in 1955, this text incorporates the pedagogical teaching of mathematics implemented by Dr. Moore using his own collection of seminal 'problems that teach.' Designed to stimulate creativity and encourage student presentations of their solutions in the classroom, the intention is to minimize lectures by the instructor and to maximize student participation in the learning process."--Publisher's website.

APPLIED CALCULUS, 3/E brings together the best of both new and traditional curricula to meet the needs of today's students. The author team's extensive teaching experience and proven ability to write innovative and relevant problems has made this text a true bestseller. Exciting new real-world applications make this new edition even more meaningful to students in management, life and social sciences. This book will work well for those departments seeking a middle ground for their instructors. APPLIED CALCULUS, 3/E exhibits the same strengths from earlier editions including the "Rule of Four", an emphasis on concepts and modeling, exposition that students can read and understand and a flexible approach to technology. The conceptual and modeling problems, praised for their creativity and variety, continue to motivate and challenge students.

ALAN 1. BISHOP The first International Handbook on Mathematics Education was published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in 1996. However, most of the writing for that handbook was done in 1995 and generally reflected the main research and development foci prior to 1994. There were four sections, 36 chapters, and some 150 people contributed to the final volume either as author, reviewer, editor, or critical friend. The task was a monumental one, attempting to cover the major research and practice developments in the international field of mathematics education as it appeared to the contributors in 1995. Inevitably there were certain omissions, some developments were only starting to emerge, and some literatures were only sketchy and speculative. However that Handbook has had to be reprinted three times, so it clearly fulfilled a need and I personally hope that it lived up to what I wrote in its Introduction: The Handbook thus attempts not merely to present a description of the international 'state-of-the-field', but also to offer synthetic and reflective overviews on the different directions being taken by the field, on the gaps existing in our present knowledge, on the current problems being faced, and on the future possibilities for development. (Bishop et aI. , 1996) Since that time there has been even more activity in our field, and now seems a good time to take stock again, to reflect on what has happened since 1995, and to create a second Handbook with the same overall goals.
