In the lumber camp days and pioneer days the cooks learned from each other and the old world cooks. Each taught the other his country's cooking secrets. Out of the mixing came fine food, prepared as nowhere else in the world. I am putting down some of these recipes that you will not find in cookbooks plus many other historical recipes. Each recipe here is a real cooking secret. I am also publishing for the first time authentic historical recipes of great importance.--Introduction page 5.

Bull Cook by George Herter (1911-1994) is one of the most uniquely fascinating "cook books" ever published. First available in 1960 and sold by the thousands through the now defunct Herter's sporting goods mail-order store based in Waseca, Minnesota, Bull Cook features a truly impressive collection of classic recipes and cooking tips, guaranteed to make you a better cook. Extensive directions for making wines and beer are included, as well as a delicious assortment of desserts. No matter the recipe - whether for meat, fish, seafood, soup, sauce, vegetable, dessert, or drink - they all follow Herter's refreshing, no-nonsense mantra that the greatest recipes are always simple. This new edition and new format highlight Herter's many recipes for easier use in the kitchen, while retaining Herter's entertaining and informative text. George Herter began his business career in 1937 when he transformed his father's dry goods store in Waseca into a pioneering mail-order outdoor supply business, selling hunting and fishing goods through a catalog. He later expanded into retail outlets, but mounting debts forced the company into bankruptcy in 1981. Herter used his mail-order business and stores as venues to sell large numbers of his books, with the Bull Cook series being his most popular work. He also authored books on outdoor and survival skills, fly-fishing, candy- and wine-making, and how to escape the "rat race."
