Book Synopsis Buddha: Volume 7: Prince Ajatasattu by : Osamu Tezuka

Osamu Tezuka's vaunted storytelling genius, consummate skill at visual expression, and warm humanity blossom fully in his eight-volume epic of Siddhartha's life and times. Tezuka evidences his profound grasp of the subject by contextualizing the Buddha's ideas; the emphasis is on movement, action, emotion, and conflict as the prince Siddhartha runs away from home, travels across India, and questions Hindu practices such as ascetic self-mutilation and caste oppression. Rather than recommend resignation and impassivity, Tezuka's Buddha predicates enlightenment upon recognizing the interconnectedness of life, having compassion for the suffering, and ordering one's life sensibly. Philosophical segments are threaded into interpersonal situations with ground-breaking visual dynamism by an artist who makes sure never to lose his readers' attention. Tezuka himself was a humanist rather than a Buddhist, and his magnum opus is not an attempt at propaganda. Hermann Hesse's novel or Bertolucci's film is comparable in this regard; in fact, Tezuka's approach is slightly irreverent in that it incorporates something that Western commentators often eschew, namely, humor.

Book Synopsis The Word of the Buddha - 7 by : Tomás Morales y Durán

In the first two booklets the process of experience is analyzed in depth and the total absence of control over it is confirmed. This should be more than enough to understand the first noble truth and by understanding this, the other three are understood. The following booklets deal with various topics. In Samyutta 16 on Kassapa, a curious anecdote occurs. In SN 16.9 "Jhānas and Paranormal Abilities" the Buddha reviews all his meditative attainments of the Buddha by comparing himself with his predecessor the Buddha Kassapa. This is why he adds to each achievement "and Kassapa too". This would not be of great importance if it were not that Kassapa, the disciple of the Buddha in charge of overseeing the Discipline of the Sangha of the bhikkhus, upon hearing it understood that he was referring to himself, not to the eponymous Buddha, which will provoke in him a conceit that will lead him, in the following two suttas, to two shameful fights of greengrocers with Ānanda with desolate results for the bhikkhunīs. The Book of the Factors of Clinging to Existence is the third of the five books of the Interwoven Discourses. It is named after its first saṁyutta which is the dominant one both in length and importance, since it deals with a key aspect of the teachings. The analysis of the factors of clinging to existence represents the logical level systematization of experience and is key to understanding suffering and describes how we are chained to Samsara. Experience involves five processes: qualia, emotional reaction, perception, conditional situation and cognition. The first is the process related to sense inputs and the other four are the processes of conceptualization.

Book Synopsis Old Path White Clouds by : Thich Nhat Hanh

‘The Buddha was the source. Venerable Svasti and the young buffalo boys were rivers that flowed from the source. Wherever the rivers flowed, the Buddha would be there.’ In Old Path White Clouds, the world's revered master of mindfulness, Thich Nhat Hanh, retells the story of the Buddha in his own inimitably beautiful style. He draws upon Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese sources to trace the Buddha’s life slowly and gently through the course of eighty years. Seen partly through the eyes of the Buddha himself and partly through those of Svasti, the buffalo boy, Old Path White Clouds brings the Buddha closer to us as we journey with him on his path to enlightenment and nirvana.

Book Synopsis Treatise on Wisdom - 7 by : Tomás Morales y Durán

My friend Víctor Chamorro says that life is made to end in a good book. There are people who collect cars and, when they have the best collection, they go on to collect yachts. My case is similar except that what I like to collect is knowledge. This is how I saw how short the limits of human knowledge are and how easy it was to expand them. I gained confidence based on experience and showed that it was not difficult to research, develop and innovate elegant solutions. Pushed down a descent into hell and after emptying a public library, I got the problem: if genes use me to replicate for their own benefit and memes that parasitize my mind and think for me do the same ... A good question leads to a good answer.

Book Synopsis Old Path, White Clouds by : Nhất Hạnh (Thích.)

Drawn from original sources, Old Path White Clouds is the beautiful classic recounting of the life and teachings of Gautama Buddha over the course of eighty years. It is retold alternately through the eyes of Svasti, the buffalo boy who provided kusa grass for the Buddha's enlightenment cushion, and the Buddha himself.
