The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto -- of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized -- is one of the greatest moments in literary history. A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was 30 years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

In a series of recollections, writer Wilfred Arvizu, an original member of the young mariachi group, tears back the curtain and provides an inside look on how he and others dealt with a pedophile priest who was at once a self-confessed agnostic and not-so-self-confessed alcoholic and possible bi-sexual.

Father Paul Roberts offers us a historically relevant, yet compassionate and humorous, account of the inner workings of the oldest corporation in the world. This memoir introduces us to a man's life journey, from childhood, through the preparations for the seminary, the pitfalls on the spiritual path, to his maturation and commitment to entering the ancient order of priests. Bless Me Father For They Have Sinned does not shy away from the day-to-day encounters with sensual temptations, boundary violations, and alcohol abuse. The reader has a ringside seat as these men and women grapple with mental health issues, struggle with questioning power structures, instigate changes to training and rehabilitation protocols, and try to bring their venerable church into alignment with a contemporary modus operandi.

It is not only young boys that Roman Catholic priests abuse; these dysfunctional, deceitful predators, who use God as an excuse for their behavior, emotionally damage many unsuspecting adult women. Bless Me, Father, For I Have Sinned: Confessions of a Priest’s Mistress is the story of one woman’s involvement with a Roman Catholic priest and how it changed her life. Just as the male victims are coming forward to tell their stories, there can be no closure for Maggie Renaldi until this story is told. During a vulnerable period in her life, Maggie meets Father Brendan O'Reilly and embarks upon a clandestine affair. Father O'Reilly's fear of commitment and his "I love you, go away" behavior threaten to destroy their friendship and their love, until Maggie intervenes and O'Reilly seeks therapy to save himself. Unfortunately, he chooses a priest-psychotherapist who adds more guilt and shame. From seminaries that require young men to beat themselves bloody to bring the flesh into subjection to bishops who play politics, from power-hungry nuns to superiors who profess "the party line," Bless Me, Father, For I Have Sinned is also a graphic picture of church politics and hypocrisy. Maggie Renaldi is not her real name. All the names as well as the places have been changed to protect the innocent (as well as the guilty).

Bless Me Father, For You Have Sinned was originally conceived to be a book about the sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy in less developed countries. In doing the research, the book took a turn in a somewhat different direction. I discovered that sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy was only a subset of wide abuse by clergy of children and adult women. It appears that many individuals who join the Church are not really prepared to live the life advocated by Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Indeed, many of those who decide to make a religious life their vocation are ill prepared for this endeavor. It may well be, especially for celibate priests and nuns, that the frustration of living without a partner, and no sex, manifests itself in deviated behavior and abuse, both of children and women. This book delves into the history of the Church's abuse of women and children going back to the early fourth century, before Constantine created the religion we now know as Christianity. The Church has a long history of not only abuse of women and children, but also of covering its tracks. Bishops and clergy supervisors make a point of protecting the "Mother Church" at all costs. It appears that the "children be damned" attitude is pervasive and has existed for centuries. The book recounts:* Conversations with Cardinals Dolan (New York) and Tagle (Manila) which "never" happened.* Father [Tyrannosaurus] Rex, who molested dozens of Philippine women and children, and was the prime suspect in two murders of young women who rebelled.* Children with broken bones from clergy abuse.* Sadistic physical abuse of young boys witnessed by a made member of the Mafia, incarcerated as a youth offender in a reform school run by the Catholic Church.* Recent Church efforts in the Philippines to end sex abuse of young females by the Japanese but not its own clergy.* A Philippine facility which cares for, through delivery, young women impregnated by Catholic priests to limit abortions.* The clergy pedophile manifesto, a manual designed by a priest on how to groom children to be abused.* The sacrament of abuse: two Philippine boys led in ritual prayers prior to simultaneous molestation.* A blueprint for the Holocaust designed at the Vatican; Church assistance to Nazi war criminals to elude justice.* Catholic clergy, linked to the Nazis, who participated in the genocide of Jews and Orthodox Christians during World War II.* Sadism among Catholic clergy.* Awareness in the Vatican hierarchy, including Popes, that children were being molested by its clergy and its failure to act for over half a century.* The Church's continuing struggle with modernity, and its pervasive hypocrisy at the highest levels.* Theft and subsequent sale of babies for profit. The book describes resident evil in the Church and how many of its clergy act more like criminals than servants of god whose calling is to spread the "good news," the Gospels and teachings of Jesus Christ. It further exposes the "bad faith" of bishops and other clergy supervisors who cover for abusive underlings. This is an especially large problem in less developed countries where child protection laws either don't exist or, if they do, they are not widely enforced. As the Church expands its reach into Africa, will this underdeveloped continent become the assignment of choice for Catholic missionaries? In Africa, priests molest children with impunity and often co-habituate with adult women with whom they have children. In the Philippines priests have children but the Church does not provide for their financial support. Widespread homosexuality exists in the Roman Curia while some bishops enjoy lavish lifestyles utilizing Church funds. Oh the hypocrisy! Evil committed by Catholic clergy is not rare. The book asks the rhetorical question, is the Catholic Church the Church of Jesus Christ or the Church of Satan? The reader will have to decide for himself after reviewing the evidence.
