Black Beauty, a classic novel written by Anna Sewell and first published in 1877, is considered even today as one of the major animal stories for children. It is an autobiographical and fictionalized narration of a handsome and well-bred horse. Black Beauty, a well-born horse, who is initially owned by kind masters but is sold to successively crueler owners, narrates the story. After suffering ill-treatment and facing torture from various owners, he collapses, but in the end, he gets another kind owner and recovers eventually. John, a kind and caring master, who takes care of the horses, teaches young Joe how to groom the horse. Throughout the novel, Beauty remains a faithful horse, serving all his masters even if it means suffering from several ordeals. He is an ideal horse—obedient, willing, intelligent, and courageous. Ginger, another important character in the novel, is an unhappy horse whose tale is full of hardships and cruelty from her masters. The book, Black Beauty, is aimed at inducing kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses.

From the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner: Two girls who grow up to become women. Two friends who become something worse than enemies. This brilliantly imagined novel brings us the story of Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio. Nel and Sula's devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

Previous work discussing Black beauty has tended to concentrate on Black women's search for white beauty as a consequence of racialization. Without denying either the continuation of such aesthetics or their enduring power, this book uncovers the cracks in this hegemonic Black beauty. Drawing on detailed ethnographic research amongst British women of Caribbean heritage, this volume pursues a broad discussion of beauty within the Black diaspora contexts of the Caribbean, the UK, the United States and Latin America through different historical periods to the present day. With a unique exploration of beauty, race and identity politics, the author reveals how Black women themselves speak about, negotiate, inhabit, work on and perform Black beauty. As such, it will appeal not only to sociologists, but anyone working in the fields of race, ethnicity and post-colonial thought, feminism and the sociology of the body.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner—a powerful examination of our obsession with beauty and conformity that asks questions about race, class, and gender with characteristic subtly and grace. In Morrison’s acclaimed first novel, Pecola Breedlove—an 11-year-old Black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others—prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning, and the tragedy of its fulfillment. Here, Morrison’s writing is “so precise, so faithful to speech and so charged with pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry” (The New York Times).
