This may well be the first book devoted to a single photograph. And surely no photo is more deserving of a comprehensive study than this one, widely considered the most striking and unforgettable image we have of the Holocaust.

Firearms violence is as American as apple pie in a country where the right to bear arms is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Yet, our forefathers could not have imagined armor-piercing bullets, automatic assault rifles in the hands of criminals and suspects using such weapons to kill concert attendees, church-goers and school children. Dr. Rahn Bailey and his coauthors take a hard look at firearm violence from the seat of a medical professional, the issues behind such violence and, finally, how the medical community should be responding to such issues. There is a notion by some, pushed by the National Rifle Association that the only way to stop a "bad guy with a gun is a gun is a good guy with a gun." Dr. Bailey and his colleagues take on that notion head on. His has seen firearm violence up close as a physician and what it does to the victim and everyone around him or her. As an African-American psychiatrist, Dr. Bailey has something to say on the subject that is authoritative, noteworthy and one many should hear. There is a prevailing feeling among some that bringing more guns into a situation will actually make an area or situation safer. That simply is not true. Dr. Bailey's book will examine the impact of suicide and guns, active shooters, how guns are used interpersonally. Many are dying needlessly simply because guns have been introduced into a situation. That does not mean fist fights do not lead to deaths, or conflicts with knives, bats, rocks, etc. will leave people dead. When someone can take a weapons that can fire off hundreds of rounds of ammunition in minutes - even seconds - victims have little chance to survive much less fight back. Gun violence is a health care issue and must be acknowledged as such, researched and treated in such a manner. Dr. Bailey and his colleagues will make that case in the following pages.

On October 23, 2009, Somali pirates kidnapped Paul and Rachel Chandler from their sailing boat, the Lynn Rival, in the Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. In this remarkable memoir, the Chandlers recount their terrifying ordeal, revealing the inspiring and poignant story behind the dramatic headlines. The book chronicles the aftermath of the attack, and how the Chandlers' captors held them in Somalia for more than a year while trying to extort millions of dollars from their middle-class family. It goes on to describe how despite enduring threats, intimidation, solitary confinement, and even whippings, their unshakable belief in each other and their determination to survive sustained them. With its detailed, day-to-day account of the experience of being held captive by pirates, this unique and inspiring story will resonate with travelers the world over.

"[Nila northSun's poems] embrace her tribal identity and confront the challenges of being a contemporary American woman. Her poems are a confession of the extremes of her life: the highs of a first kiss, the lows of coming home to an empty house. They tell how it feels to hold a rebellious child, to wait too long for a too late lover and to miss tomorrow that is already gone. They tell what it is to love at gunpoint."--Page 4 of cover.

Not since student turmoil and unrest wreaked havoc on the nation's campuses three decades ago has American higher education been the subject of so much controversy and popular criticism. Countless indictments compete for the public's attention as critics explore vital issues confronting today's institutions of higher learning: curricular fragmentation, declining academic standards, the apparent erosion of liberal learning within academe, widespread neglect of undergraduate education in favour of academic research and unprecedented financial woes. Confusion over fundamental priorities and purposes, the author argues, lies at the heart of the dilemma facing end-of-the-century higher education. Thoughtful and timely, Crisis in the Academy offers a wide-ranging analysis of contemporary higher education while making an important contribution to the ongoing public debate over the future of America's beleaguered and diverse institutions of higher learning.
