It was 1994 and the third of nine journeys in the "And There I Was" series - Pakistan, China. An audacious undertaking, the author's route took him north through the heart of Pakistan to the North West Frontier and the Northern Areas, lands inhabited by fierce tribal clans who through the centuries had repelled the world's greatest armies. Once there, a crossing of the world's highest road across the Karakoram Mountains down into Western China, then traveling the breadth of the country - over a thousand miles by rail, fifteen hundred by boat down the mighty Yangtze. Break bread and target practice with the Pashtuns, cross Shandur Pass by jeep on a goat trail with gun-toting, drug-crazed Iqbal. Visit the endangered Kalash tribe, descendents of Alexander the Great. Experience the remote Silk Route market of Kashi, black chicken soup and a ghost city on the Yangtze. Commune with perfectly preserved thousand year old mummies then sit on a mountain hillside discussing humanity, life and the world with a little village girl who speaks three languages and aspires to change the world. DH Koester has been a farmhand, aerospace engineer, atomic physicist, vagabond, materials engineer, professional photographer, artist, furniture maker, writer and hobo. He holds degrees in both Physics and Mathematics and though a citizen of the United States, he spent seven years in the Canadian North.

This is the second of nine journeys in the "And There I Was" series. In 1991, through a chance meeting in Bangkok with an old CIA station chief and his retired French army counterpart, expeditions were arranged into Cambodia and Laos, both still reeling fifteen years on from the devastating effects of war and genocide. The author's route took him through Thailand's northern hill country, on to Cambodia and Laos and finally Nepal and India. Experience intensely profound moments in Laos and Cambodia, sit along the Mother Ganges in the holy city of Varanasi beneath billowing clouds of smoke from crematoriums and contemplate the path of life. Bear witness to Cambodia's horrific memorials to the genocide and take in the grandeur of Angkor Wat. Sit in a cave on the Mekong and explain to a Pathet Lao soldier why your country indiscriminately killed so many of his people. Die a slow death in an island bungalow on the Gulf of Thailand, feel the heart-wrenching anguish of a young girl's cremation and finally, the emotions evoked when setting one's eyes for the first time upon the Taj Mahal. DH Koester has been a farmhand, aerospace engineer, atomic physicist, vagabond, materials engineer, professional photographer, artist, furniture maker, writer and hobo. A journey through disturbing yet crucial matters that must be considered prior to End Times and Christ's return. This second volume takes a different approach from the first. It is a journey, not a pick-and-choose buffet. It begins by taking the reader where the first volume left off, ""down the rabbit hole."" The journey concludes in confronting the LDS reader with a crucible, wherewith one's faith and trust in Christ (and in Christ alone) will be put to the ultimate test. There are save two churches only: Which one does your everyday mindset, and your personal and professional choices, testify that you are a member of? What is the foundation upon which you anchor your sacred testimony? How close, how intimate, how cherished is your relationship with Jesus Christ? If you are not prepared to answer these questions with full conviction of heart, then you are not ready to contemplate the contents of this book.

Structuring Sense explores the difference between words however defined and structures however constructed. It sets out to demonstrate over three volumes that the explanation of linguistic competence should be shifted from lexical entry to syntactic structure, from memory of words to manipulation of rules. Its reformulation of how grammar and lexicon interact has profound implications for linguistic, philosophical, and psychological theories about human mind and language. Hagit Borer departs from language specific constructional approaches and from lexicalist approaches to argue that universal hierarchical structures determine interpretation, and that language variation emerges from the morphological and phonological properties of inflectional material. Taking Form, the third and final volume of Structuring Sense, applies this radical approach to the construction of complex words. Integrating research in syntax and morphology, the author develops a new model of word formation, arguing that on the one hand the basic building blocks of language are rigid semantic and syntactic functions, while on the other hand they are roots, which in themselves are but packets of phonological information, and are devoid of both meaning and grammatical properties of any kind. Within such a model, syntactic category, syntactic selection and argument structure are all mediated through syntactic structures projected from rigid functions, or alternatively, constructed through general combinatorial principles of syntax, such as Chomsky's Merge. The meaning of 'words', in turn, does not involve the existence of lexemes, but rather the matching of a well-defined and phonologically articulated syntactic domain with conceptual Content, itself outside the domain of language as such. In a departure from most current models of syntax but in line with many philosophical traditions, then, the Exo-Skeletal model partitions 'meaning' into formal functions, on the one hand, and Content, on the other hand. While the former are read off syntactico-semantic structures as is usually assumed, Content is crucially read off syntactico-phonological structures.

The surprising final chapter of a great American life. When the first volume of Mark Twain’s uncensored Autobiography was published in 2010, it was hailed as an essential addition to the shelf of his works and a crucial document for our understanding of the great humorist’s life and times. This third and final volume crowns and completes his life’s work. Like its companion volumes, it chronicles Twain's inner and outer life through a series of daily dictations that go wherever his fancy leads. Created from March 1907 to December 1909, these dictations present Mark Twain at the end of his life: receiving an honorary degree from Oxford University; railing against Theodore Roosevelt; founding numerous clubs; incredulous at an exhibition of the Holy Grail; credulous about the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays; relaxing in Bermuda; observing (and investing in) new technologies. The Autobiography’s "Closing Words" movingly commemorate his daughter Jean, who died on Christmas Eve 1909. Also included in this volume is the previously unpublished "Ashcroft-Lyon Manuscript," Mark Twain’s caustic indictment of his "putrescent pair" of secretaries and the havoc that erupted in his house during their residency. Fitfully published in fragments at intervals throughout the twentieth century, Autobiography of Mark Twain has now been critically reconstructed and made available as it was intended to be read. Fully annotated by the editors of the Mark Twain Project, the complete Autobiography emerges as a landmark publication in American literature.
