The residents, who are a peaceful and imaginative Celtic race, were shocked by the sudden declaration of war and many of them joined the army to defend their country. The author focuses on the story of a young man named Bob Nancarrow and his love interest, Nancy Tresize. Bob has just returned from Oxford and is eager to spend an afternoon with Nancy at Gurnard's Head, a popular coastal spot. Despite the war, Bob is focused on spending time with Nancy and admiring the beautiful scenery of Cornwall.
