Over the years, we have focused attention on a wide range of topics, but this is the first Yearbook with a geographical focus, and a vast continent at that. A focus on Africa seems both timely and important. When issues about children and media are discussed, all too often the frame of reference is the media culture of the Western world. There is an urgent need for the agenda to become open to non-Western thoughts and intercultural approaches to a much higher degree than is the case at present. The essays in this volume reflect a wide-range of issues and concerns related to children's media culture in Africa. For example, several address the role of entertainment television in Addis Abba, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and Zambia and in the lives of Muslim children. Other essays introduce us to children-centered media from Ghana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, and the innovative programs of PLAN-International. Many international and national charters and declarations have sought to define and protect the rights of children and ensure their safety. Although many African countries subscribe to these international conventions and charters, rights violations against children have not diminished, and negative actions against children are still carried out daily. Though the media have been charged with the responsibility of active involvement in protecting the interest of the child, it is important to examine how well they have fared in the performance of this duty and the challenges that occur in the process, as well as identify future pathways to ensure that the media succeeds in this assignment. What does it mean to be a child in Africa? In the detached Western media, narratives of penury, wickedness and death have dominated portrayals of African childhood. The hegemonic lens of the West has failed to take into account the intricacies of not only what it means to be an African child in local and culturally specific contexts, but also African childhood in general. Challenging colonial discourses, this edited volume guides the reader through different comprehensions and perspectives of childhood in Africa. Using a blend of theory, empiricism and history, the contributors to this volume offer studies from a range of fields including African literature, Afro-centric psychology and sociology. For all that is known about the depth and breadth of African American history, we still understand surprisingly little about the lives of African American children, particularly those affected by northern emancipation. But hidden in institutional records, school primers and penmanship books, biographical sketches, and unpublished documents is a rich archive that reveals the social and affective worlds of northern Black children. Drawing evidence from the urban centers of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, Crystal Webster's innovative research yields a powerful new history of African American childhood before the Civil War. Webster argues that young African Americans were frequently left outside the nineteenth century's emerging constructions of both race and childhood. They were marginalized in the development of schooling, ignored in debates over child labor, and presumed to lack the inherent innocence ascribed to white children. But Webster shows that Black children nevertheless carved out physical and social space for play, for learning, and for their own aspirations. Reading her sources against the grain, Webster reveals a complex reality for antebellum Black children. Lacking societal status, they nevertheless found meaningful agency as historical actors, making the most of the limited freedoms and possibilities they enjoyed.

A short note on Africa for kids is a text intended to give a brief and objective information about the history and society of Africa to kids living in the West. The idea to write this piece came from the false information about Africa that I usually get from my 7 years old daughter like the assertion that Africans live with wild animals like a lion at home. We know that international aid agencies and developmental organisations use (put) emotional pictures on public boards like half-naked African kids looking for food in public waste containers in order to attract donations. While such pictures might be real, it does not give an objective image of Africa. I believe this situation has contributed to the negative and false impression of Africa, not only for kids but some adult too. The sole task of this booklet is to give a true picture of Africa to our kids. Parents are advised to read this note with their kids. If we as African parents do not correct this misconception of Africa to our kids, they will believe the lies told on the streets and some times by the Western media. Africa is a beautiful continent despite poverty, socio-economic and political unrest facing the continent today. The rich natural and human resources make Africa a potentially rich continent.
