Excerpt from A Treatise on Spiritual Comfort The sovereign antidote to that sinful and griev ous distemper of mind, is the spiritual and holy consolation, which is offered and promised in the gospel. Much of the sacred Volume was written for this end, that the saints might be comforted, and that they, through patience and comfort of the Scriptures, might have hope' God, in the exceeding riches of his grace, has given in his word, and confirmed by his oath, many great and precious promises; in order that all who have fled for refuge, to lay hold upon the hope set be fore them, might not only have consolation, but strong consolation. He hath spoken in his holi ness, on purpose that they might rejoice; that they might be so filled with all joy and peace in believing as to serve him with gladnessd; and thereby, to recommend faith and holiness to all around them. Excerpt from A Treatise on Comforting Afflicted Consciences If the theory stated in the definition be admitted, our views of the moral nature of man will be greatly elevated. We must thenceforward regard him as showing from his construction, that he was intended by his Creator for the highest species of moral agency; that he was designed to act not merely ao cording to the supposed effect of his conduct upon so ciety, but agreeably to the intrinsic and immutable nature of truth. His responsibility would at the same time seem to be greatly enhanced by the possession of a susceptibility, which enables him to discern whether an action be right or wrong with as much precision as the palate of his mouth enables him to distinguish sweetness from bitterness. It would also follow, that moral instruction should be greatly conducted with a view to it; and that instead of the modern mode of estimating the qualities of an action by forming an estimate of its expediency, we should with ancient moralists make our appeal to the preference or dislike of our inward emotions. They who adopt the Opinion that conscience is an acquired capability, must admit the conclusion, that the moral part of our constitution is comparatively destitute of guidance. Excerpt from A Treatise of Spiritual Life: Leading Man by an Easy and Clear Method From the Commencement of Conversion to the Very Summit of Sanctity The author's long dedication to the Blessed Virgin I have omitted, as a practice now entirely obsolete. For the rest, I am confident the faith ful of every state and condition will welcome the reappearance of this long-concealed treasure, and will largely avail of the wealth in its pages. I have a hope, too, that this translation may help to open the eyes of the deluded Latter-day Saints, Entire Holiness People, and those who get Religion, to the extreme folly of their systems, and teach them what true sanc tity is. Excerpt from The Perfection of Man by Charity: A Spiritual Treatise The principal scope of the Treatise is to show that the whole work of our perfection is reduced to the development of the one central virtue of love, namely, the habit of Divine Charity, as being the spring of our actions, and the soul of the virtues in the supernatural order; on which all the laws of God rest,1 wherein they are all contained,2 and to the perfection of which they all tend.3 And, further, to bring forward the important and practical teaching of S. Thomas,4 and S. Bonaventure,5 that the Spirit of God works in us through the medium of His own virtue of love; Izaez'tu 6 thus governing us according to our nature, which moves by means of love, freely, readily, and sweetly.
