A Child's History of England is a book written by Charles Dickens published in serial form in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Dickens. The first instalment of the book appeared on January 25, 1851 and the last instalment was pblished on December 25, 1852. Although a work of non fiction, Dickens brought his skills as a novelist to his description of the key events and personages of English history, resulting in a vivid and highly readable account which enjoyed immense popularity as a serial and, later, in book form. The instalments which were first published in the magazine Household Words, were then collected and re-published in a 3-volume book also entitled A Child's History of England. The book was adopted as a text book in British schools and was in use well into the first half of the 20th century, despite the fact that many critics pointed out that the book was not well researched and not always historically accurate.A Child's History of England covers the period of English history from approximately 50 B.C. to around 1669 A.D., with an additional summary of the events leading up to the reign of Queen Victoria.

A Child's History of England If you look at a world map, you will see two islands in the sea in the upper left corner of the eastern hemisphere. They are England, Scotland and Ireland. England and Scotland make up the bulk of these islands. Ireland is next in size. The small neighboring islands, which are so small on the map that they are mere dots, are mainly small chunks of Scotland, separated, dare I say, over a long period of time, by the power of restless water.
