As a scientist and therapist, Dr Cheri Florance had the skills and training to help her patients to overcome speech and hearing difficulties. But nothing could prepare her for her toughest challenge -- her own son Whitney. From birth, he appeared unable to hear, seemed incapable of making any sounds, and was indifferent to those around him. Although the diagnosis of autism seemed to fit, Cheri could not accept the life that such a condition predicted for Whitney. The authorities begged her to institutionalize him and in defying them she jeopardized relationships and her professional reputation. But she saw something in Whitney that no one else did -- a boy who was trapped by his inability to communicate. In Cheri Florance's intense search for answers, she not only found her son but discovered something profound about the way the brain works and how we learn. This is a story that will resonate with any parent who has struggled to help a child.

Offspring are greatly affected by broken marriages. But sometimes, offspring are the ones who help make things better. Find out how Gianna Fagan made the impossible possible and how she made the past a past, the present a challenging now and the future a bright tomorrow. Read about how complicated adults can eventually compromise if they only set refusal aside and just believe. Read about how things have to happen first before love is squeezed out of people making the world turn around.Sylvia Marri Stone, author of a fiction novel, SELINA MAE STEELE, now wrote her second book, a short novel that aims to soften and open up difficult minds to realize that there is more than just do what is best to what lies there before them. When Ms. Stone was writing this book, she herself felt that she should take a moment to reflect on things that her naked senses may not have sensed therefore bypassing very important elements of considerations that can make a great difference in whatever she did, was about to do, could have been doing, might be doing and will be doing. Inspired by the simple, the very young and the innocent and affected by sad unexpected and unavoidable circumstances that she had experienced herself, Ms. Stone's imagination created a fiction novel that hopes to turn brown to green, gray to blue, red to orange and white to yellow.

Significant Others Blondes were usually more fun…. But Troy Donovan was proving to be the exception to the rule! He was tough, uncompromising and off-limits. He had no intention of letting anyone get close to him again. And that included Lucy—especially Lucy. He'd made it clear that whatever her relaxed interpretation of her new job was, it didn't include bedroom duties. Lucy Barnes was a brunette…and as far as she was concerned she could make her own rules. She may have traveled to the Caribbean on a whim but impulsiveness was only one of Lucy's weaknesses. The other was for tall blond men—and Troy was one of the sexiest she had ever met! He'd told her he didn't believe in mixing business with pleasure…and that was fine with Lucy. Why let business get in the way of anything? From the author of WILDFIRE: "Pure pleasure…"—Romantic Times

Media pundits, politicians, and the public are often skeptical or ambivalent about granting asylum. They fear that asylum-seekers will impose economic and cultural costs and pose security threats to nationals. Consequently, governments of rich, democratic countries attempt to limit who can approach their borders, which often leads to refugees breaking immigration laws. In Refuge beyond Reach, David Scott FitzGerald traces how rich democracies have deliberately and systematically shut down most legal paths to safety. Drawing on official government documents, information obtained via WikiLeaks, and interviews with asylum seekers, he finds that for ninety-nine percent of refugees, the only way to find safety in one of the prosperous democracies of the Global North is to reach its territory and then ask for asylum. FitzGerald shows how the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia comply with the letter of law while violating the spirit of those laws through a range of deterrence methods-first designed to keep out Jews fleeing the Nazis-that have now evolved into a pervasive global system of "remote control." While some of the most draconian remote control practices continue in secret, Fitzgerald identifies some pressure points and finds that a diffuse humanitarian obligation to help those in need is more difficult for governments to evade than the law alone. Refuge beyond Reach addresses one of the world's most pressing challenges-how to manage flows of refugees and other types of migrants-and helps to identify the conditions under which individuals can access the protection of their universal rights.
