This book represents a new direction in the study of religion and marriage by using a postmodern theoretical framework focusing on gendered discourse and culture, to examine the meaning of sacred marriage within social contexts. Drawing upon data from in-depth interviews of couples in long-term, sacred marriages living in the American Midwest, together with an analysis of Christian marriage advice manuals, Sacred Marriages explores how couples use religious and nonreligious discourses and cultures to give their marriages meaning, and how those sacred meanings are used in their daily lives and the spaces that they embody. The study shows how religious and secular beliefs are combined to formulate cultural strategies for approaching the sacralization of marriage, and how religious and nonreligious discourses and cultures are ordered, depending on circumstances and social contexts. This often results in other relationships being subordinated in favour of the sacred bond believed to exist between husband and wife. The book argues that sacred marriage is a malleable concept, as people bend religious culture to form new and altered sacred marriages during emotional extremes. A thoughtful examination of long-term Christian marriages, this volume will appeal to scholars of religion and sociology with interests in marriage and the family.

"Where Is That in the Bible?" Fundamentalists and many other Protestants use this question all the time, particularly when they're dealing with Catholics. When they are being trained how to talk with Catholics, Fundamentalist evangelizers are taught to use this question. They see it as the "master key" to defeating Catholics. Countless Catholics are absolutely stumped by the question and don't know what to say in response. This is a very important principle in Protestant thought. It's the idea that we should do our theology "by Scripture alone." It even has a fancy Latin name "sola scriptura." It's time for Catholics to stop being beaten up with the Fundamentalists' favorite question. That's why Catholic Answers has published the book 100 Biblical Arguments Against Sola Scriptura by well-known apologist Dave Armstrong. This powerful new book contains just that Biblical arguments. These are the kind that you need to get through to a Fundamentalist. After all, if they're locked into the "Bible only" view, they won't even listen to appeals from other sources. That's why you need the kind of precise, Biblically-based takedown of sola scriptura that Armstrong provides.

With over 50 percent of all marriages in the U.S. ending in divorce, there is enormous hurt and pain, and confusion and misperceptions about the Catholic church s teaching on marriage, divorce and declarations of nullity (annulment). To clarify church teaching on these subjects, a current tribunal director and canon lawyer has written a question and answer guide for Catholics who are marrying people who have been divorced or are unbaptized in the Christian faith, for Catholics who are divorced and seek to remarry, and for all those who minister to them.In an easy-to-read format of questions and answers, with questions taken from real people s experiences, Vondenberger provides a clear and helpful handbook, based on her decades of experience working in the tribunal of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and from her consultative role with a Web site that provides information and opportunities for reconciliation and healing of marriage and divorce issues. This 2nd Edition includes 2015 updates to Canon Law
