There are many accounts of the Buddha's life that mix legend and history. This compelling new biography discriminates between fact and fiction to reveal Gautama, the remarkable human being behind the legends, and shed new light on his teachings. Plunging us into the noise, smells and jostling streets of Gautama's world, Vishvapani Blomfield brings the Buddha to life as a passionate and determined individual — a strikingly modern figure who rejected contemporary beliefs and found his own answers by mastering his mind. Even after he gained Enlightenment and became the Buddha ('the Awakened One') Gautama experienced struggles as well as triumphs as he trod India's dusty paths. Vishvapani shows how he sought to establish a community of practitioners amid his society's divided culture and perilous politics and how the ideas that became the Buddhist teachings grew from Gautama's efforts to address the needs and beliefs of his listeners. Drawing on years of meticulous research into original sources, Gautama Buddha takes us within touching distance of one of history's greatest figures.

Description: The two most remarkable facts about Buddhism are: it has almost ceased to exist in India-the land of its birth, while claiming about 255 million adherents in other parts of Asia; its founder Siddhartha, more well-known as Gautama Buddha, paid no importance to ceremonies and rituals, did not say a word on the supremacy of one God, yet people flocked to him and became his disciple. Even today its popularity is on the increase. What exactly is this ageless and timeless appeal of Buddhism? A.K. Coomaraswamy and I.B. Horner have given the answer in this book-The Living Thoughts ofGotama The Buddha. Commencing with the life sketch of the great teacher, they take up every aspect of his teaching for clear elucidation. All students of religion, especially those interested in Buddhist studies, shall find this book extremely useful.

Excerpt from The Story of Gaútama Buddha and His Creed: An Epic The following poem is an attempt at a reasonable narrative of Buddha and Buddhism, looking at these subjects of course from a poetical standpoint Gautama Buddha is at present hardly known to any but oriental scholars and literary men. The extravagant absurdities and contemptible puerilities of Buddhist sacred literature have effectually scared all but the most determined from an investigation of this subject; and as a natural consequence, 'the Founder of a religion, which, after more than 2,000 years, is still professed by 455,000,000 of human beings,' is ignored, misrepresented, and foolishly despised. The great Ascetic deserves to be better known. Both the attractive beauty of his life, and the tremendous influence of his creed, demand for him more attention than either thoughtful persons or even our wise men have hitherto accorded him. Excerpt from Gotama Buddha: A Biography, Based on the Canonical Books of the Theravādin The style carries the thought with limpid ease and at times ripples with genial humor. Attention is purposely focused upon the life of Gotama, with only incidental references to the Teaching and the Order, but fortunately these subjects are fully set forth in Mr. Saunder's earlier studies, "The Story of Buddhism" and "Buddhist Ideals," as well as in many standard works. Buddhism has well-nigh died out in Gotama's own country and the forms which prevail in Tibet, China, Korea, and Japan would hardly be recognized by the founder himself. Yet his example and teaching, however distorted, are the nucleus around which all the later encrustations have formed. Just as the Christian Church has dug down through the layers of scholastic dialectic and replanted its pillars on Christ, so it is not inconceivable that even Northern Buddhism may rediscover its founder and cry, "Back to Gotama Buddha." It was a Japanese disciple of Gotama who called him "a king of the spiritual in the mask of beggary," and it is to be hoped that this volume will find readers also in Japan, for although there are several lives of Buddha written in Japanese, no one of them so happily as this combines a popular presentation with the results of recent historical criticism. Although Mr. Saunders discloses warm admiration for Gotama's character, as a faithful friend he points out his shortcomings and his fatal inability to rise above the limitations of his age. It would seem that Gotama himself realized to some degree his own limitations. Like other prophetic souls, he looked for the coming of a Buddha greater than himself, who should be called Maitri. Mr. Saunders's fine poem, "St. Francis and Gotama," shows true insight when it represents Gotama as joyfully recognizing that in Christ his highest hopes regarding Maitri had been fully realized. Mr. Saunders might well have called his work, "The Gotama of History," for it is not an unworthy companion to Doctor Glover's notable volume on One greater than Gotama. Christian readers will not be surprised to find that Mr. Saunders's exhaustive and appreciative study of Gotama seems to have heightened his supreme devotion to Jesus Christ.
